The recipient of a bachelor's degree in English and communications from Boston College, Michelle MacDonald subsequently earned a juris doctor (JD) from Suffolk University Law School, where she earned a moot court award for best brief and was executive editor of the Suffolk Law Journal. Upon earning her JD, Michelle MacDonald relocated to Minnesota in 1987 to practice family law and take on cases regarding divorce, paternity, adoption, and estate planning. She has been a practicing attorney for more than 30 years and now operates a firm in West St. Paul.
Recognized as a North Star Lawyer by the Minnesota State Bar Association every year from 2013 to 2017, Michelle MacDonald is admitted to practice law in the Minnesota and Massachusetts supreme courts, the Supreme Court of the United States of America, and the United States Court of Appeals. Her legal experience extends beyond working as an attorney, as she served as a judge with the Hennepin County District Court from 1999 to 2014 and an adjunct referee of the Hennepin County Family Court from 1992 to 2012. She is also a former three-time Minnesota Supreme Court justice nominee. Supplementing her work in family law, she is the founder and president of Family Innocence, which works to resolve domestic disputes and conflicts peacefully and outside of the judicial system.
