Your Guide to Cache in Magento

Cache has a significant role to play in improving the loading results of your webpage. In simple words, whenever you view a webpage, it gets saved as a cache and next time you want to view that same page, it gets loaded from the cache. Now, in some cases this is beneficial because it results in faster loading but in some cases this is not a very desirable choice. This article will focus of types of cache in Magento and on the Cache Storage Management feature in Magento. If you are making use of a vendor Magento development services, then the provider would know these intricacies in detail and you would not have to bother much.

Knowing the Cache Type in Magento

Different cache types in Magento are:

  • Configuration: This includes config.xml and local.xml files.

  • Layouts: This includes files related to layout.

  • Block HTML Output: This includes page blocks.

  • Translations: This includes translation files.

  • Collections Data: This includes collection data files.

  • EAV Types and Attributes: This includes entity type files.

  • Web Services Configurations: This includes application program interface (api) files. This is listed twice on the Magento interface. One for api.xml files and the second for api2.xml files.

Magento offers the provision of enabling or disabling each of the cache type. In the Cache Store Management, you can choose to “Enable” or “Disable” cache for each listed type depending on your requirement. For example, if you are making changes on the backend, it would be better to disable cache so that the changes made by you are reflected instantly. But if you are testing, then enabling cache is better because it will load results faster.

Understanding the Options

Magento presents the following two options when it comes clearing the cache.

  • Flush Cache Storage: This is a broad classification that deletes all the cache files.

  • Flush Magento Cache: This is a narrow classification and deletes the file that have been created by Magento.

The best option actually depends on the reason you are clearing cache. If you want to clear the cache to see the changes that you have been making, then use “Flush Cache Storage” option.

Clearing Cache

Clearing cache is not really a tedious affair and there are two ways to go about it.

  • Automatically from Admin Panel: In this you can simply access System and then Cache Management and then Flush Cache Storage.

  • Manually from Cache Folder: In this you would need to access the cache folder from cPanel and then select the files that you want to delete.

Enabling or disabling cache is a professional preference with benefits and downside. You will find advocates who will suggest each with strong reasons. It is important to understand the function of cache in Magento and make use of this function to the fullest.
