What exactly do people have against political correctness? There is so much vocal and visible hatred towards this idea, and I have to admit, I don’t really understand. Is the problem that people are asking for too much respect? Or is it that everyone is finally being held accountable when they choose to be huge assholes?
While, yes, it’s true that we have the right to freedom of speech, that doesn’t mean that you’re completely exempt from all repercussions that might come your way due to what you say. You can’t necessarily be arrested for what you might say, but other people have a right to exercise their freedom of speech when they blast you with their “political correctness”. Oh, that horrible political correctness.
Since when did it become gauche to call people out on their rude behavior, their harmful behavior, or their hurtful behavior? Why, in the face of so much hate in the world, do you wish to contribute towards it? It’s incredible that it is so difficult for people to accept that, hey, some people are hurt by what you say! Could you please be a mature human being and NOT purposefully hurt someone? Is that so much to ask?
Apparently it is. Though society is changing, some people are still holding steadfast. I suppose it could be admired, anyone who is that hardheaded has to hold some pretty strong convictions.
In a perfect world, we wouldn’t be threatened by political correctness. We would listen to the stories and testimonies of those treated unfairly, and we would no longer attempt to speak over the conversation. We would be civilized. We would adjust to keep up with an ever-changing, more open minded society. However, that doesn’t seem to be a viable future at this moment in time. No, people are much too concerned with their right to say bigoted things than they’re concerned with the toll those bigoted statements take.
Although a staggering 41% of Transgender people attempt to commit suicide, according to those against political correctness, we shouldn’t change the way we treat or talk about Trans people because that isn’t right. People have a right to bully them into the ground, people have a right to spew hatred, it’s protected under the first amendment. The word “Tr*nny” should be perfectly acceptable in any conversation, and hey why is Caitlyn Jenner a hero when that firefighter just saved a cat from a tree!!
In a recent study done across 22 countries, it was found that 84% of women face street harassment before the age of 17, but we treat women fine and Feminism hasn’t been necessary since white women gained the right to vote! “Blurred Lines” was an awesome song, who cares if it’s about rape? Women in first world countries have no real problems, god, stupid Feminazis!
All sarcasm aside, political correctness is needed for us to evolve as a society and as people. Terms always grow out of date, as do ideas. It has to be said, people who vehemently oppose political correctness have to lack a certain level of empathy. It takes a certain kind of person to oppose changes in the way that we see things and in the way that we talk about things. Ignoring the words of marginalized groups is just pure willful ignorance, through and through. It’s frustrating that we’ve come so far as a society towards being accepting of others, yet we still face backlash from those outdated individuals who absolutely refuse to change. People say that we will all become equal once old racists and sexists and capitalists die out, but what they don’t seem to grasp is that hate breeds hate, and racists breed racists.
A whole new generation of hatred-filled individuals walk among us every day. They are not progressing with the times, they are instead attempting to block construction on a new and safer world. Unfortunately, as with all bigots, they will never recognize that they are bigots. They will spew hatred and contempt and never realize that they are the only ones who remain angry while the rest of the world celebrates love and happiness around them.
