How This Millennial Became President of the United States

I am honored to be partnering with Captain Morgan in their incredibly important #Under35POTUS campaign, alongside my friends and fellow moguls Ben Lerer and Mickey Meyer. The campaign advocates to allow for those under the age of 35 to become president of the United States.

Millennials are responsible for some of the country's most significant economic, technological and creative advancements, yet this age group is not yet eligible to hold the nation's highest political office. Shouldn't we have a chance to be in the running to change the face of the nation?

To join the movement, I encourage you to visit www.Under35POTUS.com and sign the petition. Once it achieves 100,000 signatures by August 17, 2016, the White House will review the petition and distribute it to the right policy officials where they will issue a response.

I stand behind this campaign, and hope you will too!

This is dumb, it's a part of U.S. History and tradition to allow citizens to acquire more experience and knowledge before running for president. Stop being selfish and keep learning and improving yourself so that when the day comes, and you think your "ready" to become POTUS, you might actually then be "ready" to run for president.

It would be nice to gain control of the country before it's completely destroyed by the people who are "ready".

You have a point in that maturity and wisdom are crucial in a POTUS, and older age usually brings more of both. However, your tone is aggressive and your comment is unsound, because of the specificity of the number 35 (there is no defining moment between 34 and 35 that marks maturity or wisdom) and ad hominem.

I would support lower the age to initially 30 and see what happens. No worse than allowing a 70 year old to be president. Which is probably worse. 😄

I would support lowering the age to 30 and evaluating the results. Maybe then 29 or 28? Someone 28 serving as president would probably do a better job than someone in their 70s. People don't age very well they become cynical and grumpy. LOL.

I feel like people are focusing on the wrong aspects. If a 20 year-old wants to run for President and is seen unfit due to lack of experience and etc, we don't have to vote for them. One would think that we'd make smarter political decisions as a society - vote for the person you think fit (hence, democracy). There's no scientific proof of intelligence rising with age. If we really want to get technical, we can name just as many people over 35 that we wouldn't want as President either. Every 35+ year old won't have the same amount of experience and accomplishments as every 25 year old. What we need is a leader who understands the country's needs and has the social grace to represent our country in the eyes of other nations. We need a leader that we, as citizens of the United States, are willing to rally behind and support. Can we even do that?

you're Making generalizations is unproductive and ageist. Discussions about lowering the age limit required for a POTUS candidacy should take into account necessary credentials such as experience, capability, and knowledge. Being a certain age can mean nothing - it reflects incompetence and arrogance and intolerance just as easily as it does compassion or intellect or wisdom. The minimum of 35 was set as a precaution, but perhaps lowering it could have benefits.

you could be 80 and still not be fit to be President. Alexander Hamilton was 21 when the Constitution was created and was one of the greatest Secretary of Treasurys of our nations history. Just because he was younger than 35 didn't hinder his ability to help guide our country

While I agree that maturity and age do not always come hand in hand, your argument is flawed for several reasons. First, using Alexander Hamilton as an example is nonsensical because you cannot compare the political atmosphere of the 21st century to that of the 18th century (life spans, education level, the ages at which one would enter into the workforce or political/social spheres, etc). Second, the discussion is not that simple - the number 35 was not chosen arbitrarily: it reflects requirements of experience and wisdom. A few examples of incompetent 35+ year olds (ie Trump) are not sufficient to justify lowering the minimum age required for becoming POTUS. Your argument could apply to any age group - you could be any age and still not be fit for President. This is a discussion worth having, and I am neutral about it myself, but we still must be practical about what we say. It's not all fine and dandy where you think a hypothetical 29-year-old is fit to become President just because she shares some liberal values with you. There is a lot that goes into becoming the Dictator of the United States.

Hi, Kevin. Thanks for the sweet reply. We both agree that age is not the defining factor in the determination of one's intellectual maturity. However, you seem to have ignored my argument regarding how age can be a testament to how much experience one has, and I find it difficult to believe that you could refute that. It doesn't make sense that a 19-year-old man who has taken two courses in women's studies has superior knowledge of feminism than an actual girl who has experienced and combatted daily misogyny, or that a 19-year-old man has a superiority complex over someone who is 3 years younger. But maybe that's just me. Appreciate the feedback. Have an exceptional day! P.S.: I am an 80-year-old in a nursing home.

You think someone in their late 60s or 70s that has become so callous and cynical should be president. When I was in college my lab partner was left wing, smoked dope and girl friend was women's lib. Now he is a right wing US Rep. Go figure.

Maturity is like a bell curve and the optimal maturity is different for everyone. It maybe 30 years old for someone or 65 for someone else. My point is people become less mature and rational as they move away from that optimal point. Since we are on a linear time line you can only move forward and not back.

Interestingly, the real key to Tiffany becoming President of the United States is tied, not to age, but to gender. If Hillary is elected, it is the single most important step in removing the glass ceiling and enabling women to succeed to the position of POTUS. I just wrote about that in today's post.... "Why electing Hillary is a big deal!." Here's the link: http://bit.ly/2aRsXNk I'm in agreement that the electorate should have the right to freely elect the person of their choosing, although I personally would be skeptical of the competence of a person who is under 35 years of age. I would not close my eyes to the fact that they might be the absolutely best candidate for the job; however. If my choice right now were Donald Trump or a competent 33 year old, that 33 year old would likely get my vote. Elections are about selection. And if the candidate can persuade the majority of voters to support them, despite their relatively young age, then, so-be-it. I've earned every single one of those grey hairs you see in my photo. So it's no secret that I probably have lived longer than many folks who contribute to this site. and I know it will sound extremely cliche to many of you when I say....age will make you realize you were not as smart as you thought you were when you were younger. It's not that you get wiser, or better at deciphering information. People can be wise and smart at any age. What you gain, and it's important, is perspective. Once you've watched your children mature, you understand a great deal more about parenting than you did when you were trying to steer them down the "right" path. And once you've lived through a war, and an economic disaster, you understand more about the importance of finding peaceful solutions and the effects of economic sanctions and tax implications. Only time and experience, can provide that type of understanding and insight. And I believe that's the reason our forefathers saw fit to create the age requirement we adhere to for presidential elections.

Tiffany, can you please contact me at [email protected] I know of no other way to reach you directly. I have a book coming out that I hope can prevent romance scamming. It's a crime wave that I believe we can work together to stop. Sincerely, Joyce
