I wonder about this @Elizabeth Orley. I haven't seen hashtags as much on Facebook but definitely see how they are important on Instagram. Do you think people spend too much time focusing on building a virtual following or is it necessary in today's world?

@LucyChen I think people spend too much time focusing on building a virtual following. However, at the same time, having AN ENGAGING following can provide opportunities via influence. Facebook and Instagram know this and are putting an end to it [hence the new algorithm changes, and engagement and hashtag issues]. 'Pay for play' is the goal and therefore many will no longer play or be able to play. This will cut down the 'overcrowdedness' - somewhat how Ajit Pai [#NetNeutrality] is fighting for.

The wealthy companies will no longer have to compete with the regular folks and it'll even be easier to muffle our voices. Especially when it comes to alternative news, propaganda and such.

It completely depends what you want to DO with that following.  I work mostly with brands, and often the followers are the ones who purchase the products.  I think that influence marketing is going to be more influential in 2018.  Those who have REAL followers not paid for followers can reach more people.  The biggest problem for companies and individuals who have taken for granted the use of the "free" platforms to make a living, are that these platforms like Facebook and Instagram are not "free" anymore.  Those who pay to be seen are seen.  Social media is not what it was even a year ago.  Like everything else, it evolves.  When there is money in the mix, they built it, we came, and now it is monetized.  Hope that helps Lucy!

2018 is a bold new world for social media. I have been following groups for Instagram users and more that have traditionally used hashtags to make their feeds found. I think that in particular Instagram is going to the pay-to-play model for social just like Facebook has. So the question is "do hashtags still help you reach your audience?" My guess is that we are going to see less reach this year with hashtags. What are your thoughts fellow Moguls?2018 is a bold new world for social media. These are really great points @Elizabeth Orley. I hope people can find more of a balance in building their following but at the same time, remembering to build circles in real life as well!

Having a following that doesn't actually care about your products or services is not helpful for anyone.  Gaining the RIGHT following is what it should be about. Thanks for your comment @Maddy Bernstein
