This List of Senior Discounts for People Over 50 Might Be the Best Thing You Learn All Day

The following post was written by a man named Steve Herman. You can see the original post here

We posted it on MOGUL, however, because we cannot wait for retirement, and for our members who are already at that wonderful phase in their life, we thought the following information would be greatly helpful for you:

As I was waiting in line behind an older gentleman at Wendy's recently, I heard him ask for his senior discount. The girl at the register apologized and charged him less. When I asked the man what the discount was, he told me that seniors over age 55 -- get 10% off everything on the menu, every day. (But you need to ASK for your discount.)

Being of 'that' age myself, I figured I might as well ask for the discount too. This incident prompted me to do some research, and I came across a list of restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, travel deals, and other types of offers giving various discounts with different age requirements. I was actually surprised to see how many there are and how some of them start at the young age of 50 .

This list may not only be useful for you, but for your friends and family too. Remember, YOU must ASK for your discount!

Hi! I believe your Great Clips discount is that you get an $8 haircut, not $8 off the price. Probably the same with Supercuts.

Isn't it funny that they have all these discounts for seniors, students & military but not for disabled people? I also think that if there are going to be discounts for people over 50 "ALL" those discounts should start at the ripe age of "50" that way everyone from 50 + can enjoy these discount but I also believe that disabled people should get discounts also!

Be grateful that you even get a discount. They don't owe you anything and don't have to offer discounts - disabled or not.

Surely there are some places (although ALL should) that give discounts for the disabled.

Thanks, good reminder! One of the benes of being MY age (one month short of 71) is that I finally 'clear' every discount boundary; no need to wonder if SENIOR means: over 50, 55,60, 65 for each different industry, store, or city!...Truly, it took about 10 years to 1.) accept that I am a senior, and 2.) to remember to ask about , what I call "rewards for maturity"! Last week I asked that at the Regent Atlantic Station Theater, and my movie ticket went down $3.00...SCORE! Seems like that is the best habit to establish, to ask, "do you have benefits /discounts for Seniors?" whenever you open your wallet! Seniors RULE!

Really? You'd call and harass some poor employee endlessly over something you saw on the internet that ended up not being true? And all over a couple of cents?

Regal Cinemas: 50% off is not good everywhere. Recently (2015) I asked about the availability of an AARP discount at Regal Cinemas' United Artists Westbury (NY) Theater and was informed the only Sr. discount is for age 60 & over, no indication of how much discount. Regal Cinemas website actually gives the official corporate policy on discounts as follows: "Regal Entertainment Group’s policy for a Child’s ticket is age 3 to 11. Children under 3 are free. Regal Entertainment Group’s policy for a Senior Citizen’s ticket is age 60 and over." See http://www.regmovies.com/About-Regal/FAQ.

At the Waldorf Astoria - NYC the senior discounts, for age 65+, are 5% off, NOT $5,000 off the Presidential Suite! However, the 5% discount applies to cheaper rooms as well. If you can ever manage it, it really is a great place to stay.

I hate stupid people who think the government is "giving" us something. I have been working since I was 13 (I am now 73) and I paid a load of money to the government. They are not "giving" me anything, not even what I "gave" them for 60 years.

Called Banana Republic to confirm if they offer discounts to customers over the age 50 and over. Their company policy states retail stores offer only a 10 percent discount for customers over the age of 62 years and they do not offer it for online purchases. The list Mogul has is incorrect as of today Feb. 13, 2015. Discount is only 10 percent age 62 yrs and older

Why should cops, firemen, military or letter carriers get a discount, you all have a job and making a salary? We all know these discounts are covered be all us other "lowly " customers!!!! Why do truck drivers who deliver the food to restaurants and most of all the other good we purchase not get a discount? Farmers who grow the food, doctors and nurses who heal us, stockers and clerks in stores............ And so on.....

Not sure where they got this info, but Food Lion does not give any senior discount. We actually had a customer come in to our store with this same list in a Senior magazine (cannot remember the exact title) wanting to know if they can get the discount. Sorry but that info is unfortunately false.

I checked the Alaska Airlines 50% Senior (65+)Discountbelow is the response I received; : Hi, I'm Jenn, Alaska Airlines' automated travel assistant. For help on our website, type your question below. You Asked: do you offer 50% discounts for seniors over 65 ? Jenn: Although we don't offer senior, student, or children's fares, our lowest fares and specials can be found here, at AlaskaAir.com.

Sweet tomatoes senior age is 60, and there is the 10% discount everyday, anytime. There is, however, a senior special that runs mon-thurs 2pm-5pm that is only 7.49 and includes drink. The special does vary by location due to different cost of living in different states..

I would just like to make a small correction with rite aid at least with Pennsylvania stores they offer a 65+ day which is the first Wednesday of every month and people who are over 65 years of age will receive 20% off their purchase. They don't offer the 10% off on Tuesdays, or any money off prescriptions due to problems with insurance companies.

Fazoli's has discounts for those 62+ on Wednesday nights, at least where I live (St. Louis). You can sign up for "Club 62", which lets you order from a senior menu (the portions are about the size of their lunch entrees). You get an entree and side salad for $4, and a drink for $1.

My Subway denies the existence of a 10% discount, although I got one there for years. Now, they say you can get a free drink. I was disappointed in the change, especially since they just changed out of the blue and the same staff denied the discount was ever honored there.

If it is not printing, try highlighting just the list of discounts, edit, select, copy, and then paste into a word processing program and print. One ways than one to skin a cat. Sometimes this method does not work, but since others are printing it, I think it will work.

The Democratic party supports you. They aren't the ones always trying to cut Social Security or privatize it so the rich can get their greedy fingers into your pockets. Even if you aren't on social security yet, you need to think about supporting a party that doesn't want to cut benefits but actually supports increasing them. And get your AARP card back too....

BI-LO has a senior discount on Wednesdays which they will upload on your BI-LO card if you ask them at customer service. That way the discount is automatically applied each Wednesday you shop and you don't have to ask each time. I like BI-LO because of this and the Fuel Perks, which are also automatically loaded on my card.

Unfortunately this list is not for every location of every one of these chains. Which leads to unhappy patrons at some of these businesses when people are turned away. For instance, Prescott Valley, Az does not offer a discount at their Wendy's. Golden Coral - over 55 not 60. Fry's - first Wednesday only. It's too bad these chains can't enforce their policies across the board and not according to "region".

I was about to share this with my mom, but figured I would do a little research first. The list of hotel discounts seems to be pretty wrong. Most of the hotels listed are a "Choice Hotels" chain and they ALL only offer 10% off for AARP members. If this list were accurate, it would be great.

Thanks for this list. I will add that also with the national parks pass, you get free entry into the parks. Two apps that are great - walmart and ibotta. With walmart apps, scan your receipt and if they find a cheaper price, you get credit for the difference. With the ibotta app, you can get rebates by scanning your receipt for purchases. This is for anyone, not just seniors.

I know this not going to be very well received but here goes ; first I am a senior (67) and I think senior discounts are discriminatory. Before you get ready to lynch me, let me ask if you have ever been in a restaurant, saw a young couple with a couple of children and wondered how they could afford to even eat out with the cost of living so high? We (seniors) should not have a mortgage, are on Medicare, and should not be financially responsible for feeding, clothing, medical needs and the education of children. All you seniors out there who have raised children ,just think about it!!!!

I am 68 and bought my first house three years ago, so I have a mortgage. I have Medicare and also pay into the extra care but PT is still $40 a treatment. I have raised three kids and two of them are still living at home. They work but can not afford to be on their own. I make such a low retirement income that I do not have to pay income taxes. Luckily I live in a relatively cheap area for living expenses. I barely get by on my income. I am retired on SSDI due to my last employer not caring how the employees are damaged by the job they do. (A lot of employers feel this way). Also a lot of elderly have health issues that take a big bite out of our income. And, younger people can work a couple of jobs if necessary along with both partners working for double income. Seniors do not have that luxury. So, while you may be in a position to live well on retirement income, the same can not be said by a vast majority of elderly. Nor do we have the physical ability to "increase our income". So, you think about that!!!

That's funny because at 65 years old the house payment is still $1500 per month PLUS the bills. I'm glad that your house is paid off and you have no bills and plenty of money but not everyone does and if these discounts offend you maybe you should ignore them and be on your way.

Discriminatory? Really? At the cost of most purchases these days, I am more than willing to take a discount. I usually forget to ask so I don't get it, but I certainly don't feel discriminated against for being offered it. Bless your heart so happy you don't have a mortgage, being on Medicare you still have to pay 20% and while we should not be responsible for children, it seems the "grands" have very important needs that the parents can't always fulfill without help. I am certainly not living high off the hog. My car is 11 years old, my husband's is 7. Bring on those discounts....yes I say...bring them on. BTW, bless your heart.

Sorry You misunderstood my comment. I did not say SENIORS are discriminated against. I was simply saying that I feel for the young couples today who are trying to raise a family and provide all their needs with everything being so expensive. I too am a senior and take all the discounts I can get. No I don't have a mortgage because my husband worked 45 years and I worked 42 years to pay for our home. I am thankful that I am on Medicare and only have to worry about 20% instead of the 100 % that my children and all other young people that have a family to provide for. My husband went back to work after 1 year of retirement to help send our granddaughter to college and help provide for the "very important needs" their parents can not afford so I don't need a lecture on the "Grands". We do not live high off the hog as you suggested. My car is 20 years old and my Husbands truck is 18 years old but I am not complaining. I simply am saying that I feel for young families today and sometimes do feel guilty when my hamburger is discounted and they have to pay full price for 4 or 5 burgers. so, BTW, bless your heart for being lucky enough to drive around in "them new vehicles".

I'm 38, with graying hair, in a wheelchair, and on SSDI with Medicare, and 4 kids, and when cashiers ask if I'm a "[50/55/60/65] or older," I say, "No, but I'm on Medicare." Once, a cashier said, "Well, today we'll say you are." Meanwhile, somebody in perfect health, with savings and a career, can get a discount based on an arbitrary number. . . .

You do realize "Medicaid and the crap seniors get" were paid for by the people collecting it right? I worked from the time I was 14 and paid into Social Security. I worked straight through for 50 years and paid into the fund. If they had let me invest my own money, I would be living like a millionaire. Don't you DARE say This is not my money I am collecting now. When you work for 50 years straight and you get a whopping $1300/mo after all the money you paid in, then come back and say how we are sitting on our asses and YOU are paying for it. Stupid A$$!!

I agree with you "1,000 percent". These pieces of "shit" young people have everything they ever wanted and then some. All of the money which we have put into this Social Security (FICA)was taken from our checks throughout our lifetimes. So, yes if we want to say that they are "stupid asses"....you go for it. I am right behind you. They just don't get it. I myself, by the way, am 57 years young. I started working at the age of 12 cleaning rich peoples homes with my best friend in CA. I was put out to pasture due to an extreme disability. So, "wake up you young punks out there we get our discounts because "we have earned it". A concept you will never understand.

WOW...some major chips-on-shoulders & way too many vulgar expressions hostility from my fellow mature citizens! Deep breath & some measured responses would prob go a lot farther & certainly set a better example than all the juvenile finger pointing & name calling. Let us ALL remember that these "senior discounts" are not an entitlement or right for ANYONE! It's a promotional strategy utilized by some businesses b/c they have determined that a discount will drive more customers thru the door. These customers may ultimately $pend enough $ to cover the discounted % or item and/or attract + retain customers & build loyalty vs. patronizing a competitor. Whatever the business purpose, it really has nothing to do with who is "more deserving." You don't "earn" the right to a discount from a private business no matter how much FICA you've paid or how many years you spent gainfully employed. If you are a member of a targeted group of consumers a business wants to attract, you may qualify for a discount. No business "owes" anybody a discount.

I totally agree. But now I have to depend on family to take me places. This sucks. I just want my independence again. Don't make enough to pay rent, utilities, food, etc. And yet the government wants me to go back to work, if I feel I can't make it. Right. I am 72 years old. Can't stand for long time' can't sit for a long time' can't walk either for long periods of time. Just here counting down to my last day.

I worked since I wa 11yrs old, worked 11yrs in law enforcement, was nearly killed by a truck at work which disabled me then, was cut off by OWCP (federal) and told by the Obama administration to go apply for welfare regardless of the fact, I'm still disabled and on pain and pyschotropic meds. Ehat a great country. When you give your all and they have no use for you, they push you over. No other nation show such distance for their senior's as America does! I'm sorry if I offend anyone but, I'm living proof.....

Medicare NOT Medicaid is the senior health care for which we've been paying. Medicaid is what some people can get because they are "poor." Social security wad started as a safety net. People often say they would be rich if they had all the social security they have paid in, but most people would have spent that money and not saved it. I am happy we are forced to pay into it. It is a safety net for all if us workers but it is not meant to be a sole source of support. Everyone needs to start saving!

Have you added up all the 1200.00 you will get if you live to be 80 and then your spouse could collect on it after your gone, Fiqure 1200.00x12= 14,400.00x 15 years 216,000, did you put that much in? If you would have invested in the stock mkt, like Bush wanted to do with SS you would have lost your ass 8 years ago with inflation. I was declared disabled in 2003, I get 1560.00 and if I live as long as my relatives I will live to at least 85, fiqure I will collect, I will collect about 500.00,00 I paid nowhere near that, I collect on my dead husbands benefits. Does anyone know how Social Security started and how it has worked since that date back in the 1930s? The retirees who began receiving benefits at that time had not made any previous payments, yet they began receiving benefits. This benefits were paid by the working people who began paying as of that same date. It has continued to be that way every year until now; you, and every other person receiving benefits this year are receiving them from payments being made by working people this year. The amount you receive is determined by the number of years you had worked and paid for the benefits of others and also by the amount you earned and paid. So, you are not really receiving the accumulated amount you paid, because that has already been spent for others who had received the benefits while you were paying for them.

Well, I'm a little tired of paying for your lazy ass, so why don't you get a job and start paying into SS just like we did. You're an idiot. BTW, it's you're not your. Students get a discount too, doesn't that piss you off? And let me put it this way - I worked for 40 years, I got to retire, I get SS, I get to sleep late in the mornings and I can do anything I want. Oh, no naps here - having too much fun.

I've worked for 50+ years and was fortunate enough to make enough money to live on. Many times there wasn't much left over for the next week but I did what I had to do, along with my husband, to feed, clothe and educate our children. My greatest accomplishment was having two children who would never make a comment like "the truth" did. They were and are respectful, contributing citizens to our society. They are raising their children in the same manner as they were raised. You probably have never held a fulltime job nor worked 2 or 3 as I did because I did not expect anyone to take care of me. You have a lot to learn, I wish you well and I am proud to say you are NOT my child.

Haven't you heard -- 60 is the new 40, lol. I'm 68 and still teaching part-time and my husband is 71 and still runs his own business. We both expect to live at least 25 more years, since our mothers were well into their 90s when they died.

Well I'm 66, collecting SS AND teaching full time. Cuz when I do retire, my SS drops to around 300 because I participate in Teacher Retirement as well as SS. Just didn't do 30 years in SS to eliminate the penalty. Congress doesn't have that penalty...

I have worked all my life, from waiting tables to sewing factories, to management. The company I just got laid off from after 21years of employment with moved out of state. This comes 2 years before I am even eligible for my SS or anything. Do you young people realize how hard it is to find a job @ 60, regardless of what you may think there is age discrimination. As a manager I loved hiring the older folks simply because they worked hard and didn't make all the drama our youth of today seem to think they deserve for nothing. I call I old school work ethics! I appreciate the 10% my military husband receives in some locations, and as a vet deserves. I will also appreciate the age discounts as well, as your time will also come. All I know as a young person I never disrespected elderly people as some on here have done, I guess it's a southern thang!

Most seniors have only their social security income to live on, and they paid for it themselves via deductions in their pay. They deserve it. You don't seem to have the intelligence to you know what you're talking about before you speak.

Actually, Medicaid is for people on disability, who did not work a sufficient period of time to have any funds to draw. Therefore, if deemed disabled, they draw SSI, and are placed on Medicaid. Additionally, uninsured pregnant women and/or single mothers usually also qualify for Medicaid. "Old" people (your term), over the age of 62, are eligible for MEDICARE. Which (unlike Medicaid) does not pay 100%. There is a deductible and a copay. There now, "the truth", you have been educated and can speak a bit more intelligently.

Actually, no. I have been on disabilty since July of 2015. I had to wait a year to qualify for Medicare. I do not receive SSI. I draw Social Security Disability Income payments, which is different. It is based on what I have paid in. Those that are not disabled do not qualify for Medicare until the age of 65, 66, or 67, depending on the year you were born. I applied for Medicaid over a year ago and am still waiting on approval. You can have both, if qualified. I did receive 2 SSI payments until final approval of my disability, but it was taken out of my SSDI payments when they started. There now, "the truth" from someone who has actually been through the system. You have been educated and can speak a bit more intelligentl.

Try using your brain before you type the ignorant reply. Just hope you can live long enough to get back some of what the Gov't extracted from you on each pay check. If we could have invested that money it would have been significantly more per month. Yes you are funding us as we funded those before us. We paid it forward as are you.
