On Thursday, October 20, 2016 BRAG celebrated their illustrious honorees for the organization’s 46th Annual Scholarship & Awards Gala, held at 583 Park Avenue in New York City. The annual fundraising event recognizes the achievements of exceptional individuals in the fashion, retail and related industries who support and are aligned with BRAG’s mission. To date, through this effort, BRAG has awarded over $1 Million in scholarships to students who have achieved academic success, but exhibit financial need.
Journalist and television personality, Alicia Quarles hosted the evening, while BRAG co-presidents Shawn Outler (Senior Vice President, Leased Businesses, Pricing Operations, and Multicultural Initiatives at Macy’s) and Nicole Coakley-Dunlap (Vice President, Central HR, Diversity and Inclusion, and Community Service at Bloomingdale’s) welcomed the guests and introduced BRAG’s many highlights over its 46-year journey to mentor, inspire and support individuals in the fashion retail industry.
“Access to a mentor or sponsor – simply put, a network. That’s what being a supporter of BRAG provides students and professionals of color who have the intellectual curiosity, drive and passion for the business,” says Shawn Outler.
The 2016 BRAG honorees were: Jason McNary, (General Manager, Agnes B. –USA), Durand Guion (Vice President, Fashion Director at Macy’s) and Terri Hines (Vice President of Global Communications, Converse) who received the BRAG Business Achievement Award and LaQuan Smith (CEO and Head Designer, LaQuan Smith LLC), was honored with The BRAG JJ Thomas Innovator Award, which was presented by Mr. JJ Thomas, president of BRAG from 1972-1988.
With more than 400 guests in attendance this year, the annual scholarship and awards gala has become BRAG’s marquee event. The scholarship and internship programs are essential components of the BRAG platform. This, coupled with the professional development programs implemented at various college chapters across the country, has allowed BRAG to successfully launch careers and provide well-needed finances for students to pursue their dreams. Since 1970, over 1000 interns have participated in the BRAG program.
Past honorees at the annual gala have included: June Ambrose (Stylist, Creative Director), Sean Combs (Sean Jean Enterprises), Iman (Model, Entrepreneur), Terry J. Lundgren (CEO, Macy’s Inc.), Zac Posen (Designer), Magic Johnson (Entrepreneur/Philanthropist), Naomi Campbell (Model) and more.
