It’s the season for spring cleaning. When it comes to teenager’s skincare routine, keep it mild and simple. A skin’s health is of utmost importance and achieving that through a multi-step routine is the way to go about it. Here’s my guide to a teen’s skincare transition from winter to spring.
I cleanse with Oil OlayGentle Clean Foaming Cleanser and Trader Joe’s NOURISH All in One Facial Cleanser. These products will clean your skin without any uncomfortable tightness or irritation. It is important to keep in mind that a squeaky clean face is not ideal. That squeak is dryness and indicates stripped skin. Your skin should feel soft and hydrated after cleansing, never dry and tight. It is important to wash your face with warm water. This will allow your pores to open up and cleanser can work its magic. Rinse with cold water. This will temporarily tighten the skin by constricting blood flow.
After some drying weather, we need to rebuild our skin and replenish the moisture that was lost. Moisturizing is very important for a healthy and glowing skin. Many teens skip moisturizing, thinking that it will lead to breakouts. A moisturizer helps to increase the water content of the skin’s top layer. Switch to a lighter moisturizer. Higher temperatures result in oilier skin. It’s important to use a lighter moisturizer during spring.
What exactly do you need to look for in a moisturizer? Look out for products that double as a moisturizer and a skin protectant. Sunscreen is important all year, but imperative in the spring and summer when more of your skin is exposed to the sun for a longer periods of time. I like to use Cetephil Moisturizer and Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Oil Free Ultra Gentle Facial Moisturizer, olive oil, and vitamin E. Moisturizing is a necessity.
Spring is a good time for deep exfoliation and cleansing. Exfoliating works to help rid your skin of any dry, rough layers left over from the winter. When you’re looking for the best scrub, avoid walnut shells or apricot pits can irritate or tear the facial skin. I like to use FREEMAN Polishing Charcoal Black Sugar Gel Mask + Scrub and my homemade brown sugar and honey scrub. Here’s my DIY Facial scrub recipe that will leave your skin feel smooth, soft, and spring ready:
- Mix a tablespoon of brown sugar and honey together
- Wash face with a gentle face cleanser. Apply a small amount of facial scrub to wet skin and massage gently in a circular motion. Avoid eye area.
- Rinse and moisturize.
Daily Spring Maintenance
Adjust your skin care routine to reflect the seasonal changes that come with spring. Changing your pillowcase once a week can help prevent breakouts. Cleaning your phone screen every day will prevent breakouts. Think of all the oily fingerprints and gunk that builds up on the surface of a phone. That stuff transfers onto your fingers, which end up on your face. Keep your hands and phone clean and keep both away from your face as much as possible.
Spring is a great opportunity to throw out old cosmetics and skin care products. These products do have a shelf life. Old, outdated products can harbor bacteria and lose their usefulness. Check the dates on your products. Toss the following:
• Anything past the expiration date
• Products that appears dry or crusty
• Anything that has changed consistency, color, or smell
• Anything with an SPF older than one year
• Mascara older than three months.
• Old dirty make-up brushes and sponges
Forming good skincare habits now will go a long way when it comes to a lifetime of beautiful, healthy skin.
