What caused NOW's outrage? The statements made by Commanding Officer, Captain Peter Rose when explaining why only 2 out of 13 recent rape cases were solved. He said: “Some of them were Tinder, some of them were hook-up sites, some of them were actually co-workers. It's not a trend that we're too worried about because out of 13, only two were true stranger rapes”
Rose went on to say, "They're not total abomination rapes where strangers are being dragged off the streets. If there's a true stranger rape, a random guy picks up a stranger off the street, those are the troubling ones. That person has, like, no moral standards."
So obviously, Captain Rose credits people who rape you in countless ways that aren't strangers as having "moral standards???"
What the hey!!!
Rose's statements underscore that law enforcement has no clue what the word "consent" means. While violent "stranger" rape is a heinous act, and rape by violence is an "aggravated" form of rape, all forms of rape, whether violent or not, and whether perpetrated by a stranger or not, are devastating to each and every victim!
This was NOW's reaction:
"A commanding officer of the NYPD thinks that if you are raped on a Tinder date or by a friend, it's not as much of an "abomination" as being raped by a "true" stranger.
Considering the fact that 75% of rape victims know their attacker, this is an unacceptable attitude from a law enforcement official.
This is outrageous and unacceptable. We will join Greenpoint residents to take a stand. It's time to fight back. We want to hear directly from the Police Commissioner about how he will ensure every commanding officer in every precinct takes EVERY rape seriously.
Join us to protest outside the 94th Precinct (100 Meserole Avenue) at 1:00pm on Tuesday, January 10, 2017.
