'Stan and Ollie' and 'Bohemian Rhapsody' Underscore the Ties that Bind Creative Unions

Slapstick duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in Ulverston, UK, immortalized in bronze where Stan was born.

Families are tied in their blood lines or through legal contract such as in-laws and step families.  Friends are bound by affinity and similar interests. Creative unions, especially when they entail earning a living, are of a different stripe altogether. These two films explore this interesting interpersonal territory.

STAN & OLLIE Trailer  - Steve Coogan, John C. Reilly are Laurel and Hardy

From the press release:  Laurel & Hardy, one of the world's great comedy team, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. As they start crisscrossing the country, attendances are disappointingly low. But they've always been able to make each other laugh and as the charm and beauty of their performances shines through their audiences laugh too, and they re-connect with their adoring fans. The tour becomes a hit, but Stan & Ollie can't quite shake the specter of Laurel and Hardy’s past; the long-buried ghosts, coupled with Oliver's failing health, start to threaten their precious partnership. A portrait of the most tender and poignant of creative marriages begins to unfold as the duo, aware that they may be approaching their swan song, try to rediscover just how much they mean to each other.

Similar territory is covered in 'Bohemian Rhapsody.'

BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY Trailer - Rami Malek is Freddie Mercury

From the press release:  Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.
