Announced just last year at Sony’s E3 2016 presentation, Spider-Man largely took the world by surprise. Not only did the announcement seemingly come out of the blue, but the upcoming game was revealed to be a PlayStation 4 exclusive, being developed by Insomniac in partnership with Sony.
Although we have little concrete information to go on regarding the Spider-Man game, we have rounded up everything we’ve seen so far, and we’ll continue to update this page with any new info, such as the Spider-man PS4 release date, characters, and pre-order bonus details.
Spider-Man Release Date
Marvel Vice President Ryan Penagos let slip in a Q&A that the game would be releasing at some point in 2017, although he didn’t give any more specific details.
However, this comment from Penagos was made in the first half of 2017, and as we proceed into the latter half of the year, it seems increasingly unlikely that Spider-Man will launch before the end of 2017. Sony might not want to put Spider-Man up against the likes of Call of Duty WW2, Star Wars Battlefront 2 and more this Fall, and so a delay out of 2017 could be seen as a smart business move at this point.
Spider-Man Announcement Trailer
As we previously stated, the game was announced in a trailer during Sony’s E3 2016 conference. Insomniac, developers of Ratchet & Clank, Resistance, and Sunset Overdrive, was revealed as the developer of the game, while New York City was also shown in all its glory during the minute-long trailer.
We got a good glimpse of combat in the game, as Spider-Man used objects around him to batter his enemies. He also used his natural agility to dodge enemy attacks, swing between buildings, and navigate busy rooms, including a coffee shop filled with customers.
Will Spider-Man Tie-in to the Marvel Universe?
Based on what we’ve seen so far, it would appear that the upcoming Spider-Man game has nothing whatsoever to do with the upcoming movie, Spider-man Homecoming. In the film Spidey is played by Tom Holland. Holland has already appeared alongside Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man and Chris Evans’ Captain America in Civil War. Spider-Man in the PlayStation 4 game looks to be entirely on his own, with no other Marvel characters to be seen (yet).
This is only from the single announcement trailer, however, and while it’s doubtful that any Avengers will make an appearance in the game, famed Spider-Man villains like Doctor Octopus, Venom, and Carnage could well be antagonists in the PlayStation 4 exclusive game. It’s also highly likely that established characters like Aunt May, MJ, or Gwen Stacy will make appearances.
This is all the information we have so far on Spider-Man for the PlayStation 4, but be sure to keep an eye on this post over the coming months, particularly during E3 2017 in June, as we’ll be updating this page with all the brand new information regarding Spider-Man as soon as it breaks.
