In light of the recent tragedy in Parkland, the next county over from Miami-Dade, where I and the students of my school reside, a walk out has been announced. Although specific details as to where students are to meet up and the methods that we will take to ensure that this is properly planned out are still to be announced, we do know a few things.
First, the walk out was originally proposed by Women's March organizers on Twitter. Second, there is a page on Instagram specifically documenting our schools participation in the event by posting current details and has claimed to be posting updates to come. And lastly, as for that current information, the walk out will be taking place on March 14th at 10 AM for seventeen minutes. It will be marking exactly a month since the school shooting that has affected and will continue to affect so many lives.
While further details are still to come and many are questionably doubting the legitimacy of this walk out and whether or not students will actually be able to get away with it, the sentiment behind the notion remains pure and I wholeheartedly back it up. I am excited to see what becomes of this and I hope that everything plans out as expected.
We need to be listened to: lives are in jeopardy and if we fail to take action now, then who knows what is to come in the future? So many have already been negatively affected by the lack of gun control in the United States. So many lives have been taken as a result of something that could easily be prevented. The question "Am I next?" can't help but to linger over my mind and it shouldn't.
So please, even if you are not a student at SASP, do not fail to fight against gun violence. CHILDREN have lost lives at its hands! I encourage you to attend and take part in whatever gatherings might be occurring in your own town. I encourage you to fight until we no longer need to.
