On Wednesday, February 21, 2018, hundreds of students and many other supporters nationwide participated in a school walkout to protest gun violence; students were inspired to take a stand after the horrific events that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Wednesday, February 14, and the activism that followed from the community and its students. At these walkouts, students protested and expressed their opinions on student safety, the need for gun reform, and essentially the need to prevent future mass shootings.
As I was watching the many different videos swirling around on the internet of students walking out in protest and yearning for gun control, I found myself overcome with emotion. I was so overwhelmed to see students of all backgrounds coming together to fight the injustices that gun violence creates. Amongst the videos I came across, I saw that my very own hometown high school was also participating in the walkout; although it was my rival high school, I was still so happy and proud to see that the students from my hometown found this an important enough issue to speak up about it.
There are still more marches to come and no matter who you are, it is significant to keep in mind that this is an issue that affects us all as human beings--we all need to come together in order to save innocent lives.
