MAIDEN is the story of Tracy Edwards guts to make a dream her reality.  She started her career crewing on sail boats and went on to secure a sailing boat complete with patronage for her racing vessel.  No small feat, she went from a cook with a passion for navigation that led her to becoming skipper of the first ever all-female crew to enter the Whitbread Round the World ocean race in 1983.

Tracy’s opposed nay saying on all sides: from procuring a sailing vessel and patronage, to her male competitors opinions that an all-women crew would never make it.  Her eventual sponsor, the late King Hussein of Jordan was an outsider of sorts to the dominant culture at the time.

The micro-aggressions were plentiful as were outright chauvinistic provocations such as the yachting press which took ongoing bets on her failure.  Jordan Air came through ultimately, but potential sponsors up until then feared Edwards and her crew would perish at sea and generate negative press.

Tracy refused to give up: she had to remortgage her home (also quite an accomplishment) and bought a secondhand boat, putting everything on the line to ensure the team made it to the start line.  Successfully approaching the late King Hussein of Jordan to be their sponsor was a brilliant idea. Edwards had initially met him a few years earlier when he was a curious guest on board and she was a talkative conversing partner.

Although blessed with tremendous self-belief, Tracy was also beset by crippling doubts and was only able to make it through with the support of her remarkable crew.  With their help she went on to shock the sport world by winning 2 of the 6 legs, and came in 2nd in it's class.  They proved that women are not just tenacious, talented and on par with the skills of men.
