Working in large corporate organisations can be at times intimidating and scary especially when you are ready to take your career to the next level. Once you have slowly realised what it means to “climb the corporate ladder” it can be difficult to navigate whilst keeping your integrity intact.
I am a firm believer that your actions should always be a clear reflection of your words. With that in mind, I often get this question: How can I land a job in an area of the business where I don’t have a network?
Here are several tips:
1.- Build Rapport
In a large corporate company your stakeholders/colleagues are always going to be your detractors or your promoters. Building and investing in relationships with the people around you will not only make working together enjoyable but it will also allow you to have an affinity towards your goal.
Listen more, talk less.
2.-Learn to let it go... and move on.
We often get caught up on topics/decisions which are simply out of our control and end up spending a lot of energy on them. Learn to let things take their course; invest your time and focus on things you can actually control.
3.- Network, Network, Network!
It’s an obvious one… but some of us tend to forget about - how important it is to get to know the people around us, from the new intern to the experienced directors - make your encounters memorable as you never really know when you will meet again and on what side of the table you will be sitting on.
4.- Always be prepared
Whether this is stepping into the lift and casually finding yourself next to the CEO or participating in your weekly meetings. Someone who is prepared will always stand out for the right reasons.
5.- Lastly... Nothing is Personal
The way you handle yourself in stressful situations is something people, especially senior leaders will always notice. Even more so then how you celebrate your successes. Don't let your emotions take the best of you, remember everyone at one point has gone through the same.
Do you have any tips or advice? Have you found yourself in a similar situation?
