How to choose the best venue for your Melbourne event

Planning corporate functions can be daunting at the best of times, but when you’re busy in your everyday job and have an endless to-do list to get through, finding a venue that is going to keep both the CEO and clients happy as well as meet your budget can be a tricky task to handle.

We asked some of Melbourne’s most popular corporate suppliers and event photographers for their recommendations for cool (but not too cool for school!) corporate venues that might suit your brief.

For the purpose of keeping things easy, we’re assuming that you have a guest list of up to around 200 people so there are some obvious popular venues that may have been overlooked on this occasion, which we’ll return to in a later article.

One of Melbourne’s famous landmarks is the NGV with its epic stained glass ceiling and world-famous art exhibitions. Once the gallery closes it’s doors to the public for the day there are numerous spaces available for use from small, intimate rooms to the enormous spaces that still feel relaxed and enjoyable to be in.
The Great Hall, with the worlds largest stained glass ceiling, is probably the most popular event space.  I’ve been to see a few bands perform there and the acoustics have been sensational.

A new favourite of this photographer is the foyer area in front of the rainforest exhibit at Melbourne Museum.  By night it’s transformed into an atmospheric space with low light and lights strung from the balconies creating a lovely intimate feel. IBM hosted a great event there with food and wine pairing from popular Melbourne chefs and sommeliers. All the guests went home happy that night!

Alto event space above the Melbourne GPO building is an increasingly popular venue for corporate functions, both during the day and at night.  With its central location and great views of the Melbourne skyline, it is a great choice for a number of reasons but convenience for guests being the main one.

If it’s a short talk and mingles space you’re looking for, Deakin Edge at Federation Square is a popular and modern looking option. We’ve attended a few design events there and the edge look to the venue and views across the Yarra up to the MCG have been perfect for the invited corporate guests as well as the photography - the natural light is great! As event photographers working around Melbourne we will always favour the daylight over artificial light in a venue, but we also know that we have to take what we get!  We always make it work!

Speaking of the MCG, Melbourne’s most popular and iconic sporting venue offers several spaces, all with views of the hallowed turf below.  Corporate guests are often keen to pose for a photo here as it’s not often that they get to see the venue empty and without thousands of football or cricket fans.

If you’re looking for something more left field to impress your guests, how about Melbourne Gaol?  Guests can dine between the cells of the old gaol and get slightly spooked in the darkness when they get to hear the stories about Ned Kelly and the other criminals that once called the gaol home.  On second thoughts…

Finally, Myer Mural Hall is an old ballroom with a great reputation for fine dining and impressive corporate functions. Law firms and high profile corporates with large budgets seem to favour this venue on a regular basis. Simon Woodcock is a corporate event photographer based in Melbourne, Australia.
