Hilti Breaking new ground to build a better future
26d Plano, Texas Story
Hilti Legacy Cup winner, Doreen DiSalvo is building a better future for Bay Area cancer survivors

There are a lot of ways to build a better a future. At Hilti, we’re proud of the personal commitments our team members make to leave our world a little better off.

Each year, we come together to award the Hilti Legacy Cup, a special award that recognizes a deserving team member who is making a real impact in their community. Co-workers who are inspired by the Legacy Cup winner have an opportunity to contribute to the recipient’s chosen organization, and all donations are 100% matched by Hilti.

This year’s Legacy Cup was awarded to Doreen DiSalvo, a trade manager in the San Francisco Bay Area. Doreen received the award for her work with the SendIt Foundation, an organization that uses outdoor experiences to build community and wellness for adult cancer survivors.

Read on for an interview with Doreen and learn how her personal experience has inspired her to build a better future for those who are in the fight of their lives.

We often have a personal connection to the causes we support. Is that true in your case?

Unfortunately, yes. On September 8, 2017, I was diagnosed with stage 2B breast cancer. I am happy to share that I recently finished all my many treatments, and the cancer is now in remission.

How did you connect with the SendIt foundation?

When I was finished with radiation, I met other breast cancer survivors along the way who pointed me in the direction of resources and organizations that could help me heal and get information. Through one of those groups, the Bay Area Young Survivors, I was invited on my first SendIt trip to Inverness, California to camp, hike, and kayak. SendIt encourages people who are fighting cancer (in treatment or in remission) to be active while building community with other cancer survivors who can relate to what you are going through. For me, it was life changing.

Why did SendIt’s mission resonate so strongly with you?

I have always been physically active; hiking, cycling, Crossfit, and powerlifting are current passions of mine. When I got sick, I found that working out and staying fit helped me deal with the day-to-day challenges of treatment and helped give me the stamina to handle rounds of chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, infusions and 160+ doctors’ appointments in a single year.

How did the Hilti team support you during your treatment?

Where do I begin? My team saw me on good days and bad days. When I lost my hair, I started to take pictures of myself and whichever bald Hilti co-worker I was working with that day – and, yes, there are plenty! I called it “project baldie.” It helped me to call out the elephant in the room, but it also helped other people become more comfortable with my cancer.

I was relatively new to Hilti, but still many people – plenty of whom I did not know well - reached out to me to talk, ask about how I was feeling, and check in to see if I needed anything. This was amazing to me and something I will never forget.

What does it mean to win the legacy cup?

It is a huge honor to be recognized and to help the SendIt Foundation continue to support the cancer community in their unique way.

As time goes on and more people learn of my diagnosis, I have heard so many stories of cancer and how it has personally affected the people around me. It’s an honor to be the person that they feel comfortable sharing that with. By sharing my own experience, I hope my story may help others to feel normal as they process something so life changing. I cherish those moments the most. So many people rallied behind me during these past 18 months, and I will never forget their support and generosity.
