Help a Sister Out : Pilot

This post will be the first of the "Help a Sister Out" series. I hope the questions that I come across in my everyday life can be answered and can help some of you guys too.

Recently, my friend told me that she felt that I used her and other people. I was hurt by her statement because I don't want people to think the only reason we're friends is because I'm using them.

I don't feel like I'm using people. I just like to make connections with people and form networks- which I feel is a good skill to learn in college. If they are able to help me in some way that's cool, and if I can help them out that's cool too.

I just want to know when is it considered using people and when it is considered forming connections and networks with people. Is using someone and forming connections/networks the same thing. Is one bad and one good? In a way are they the same thing? Can one happen without the other?

There is I believe a fine line between using and networking. When you network, you should be sure to always make it clear you are there to serve others. Whether through connecting people, referring people or even offering them a service they need for pay. Using to me implies asking for something with no reciprocation or gesture of good faith.

I often sign my emails,” please let me know if I can ever be of assistance to you”. Hope that helps :)

I'm sorry you are going through this @Kirstie Moore  and I hope you are doing okay! It sounds like it was a misunderstanding. I don't think there's anything wrong with networking as long it's from a genuine place. To me, that's not using people. Life is all about helping one another.
