The wait is almost over.
In just a few weeks, Art Miami, the leading producer of international contemporary and modern art fairs led by Nick Korniloff, will present Art New York and CONTEXT New York. And from what we know, this is not the year to skip.
Art New York and CONTEXT New York are highly anticipated with reason. This year, both fairs will showcase over 120 international contemporary and modern galleries from 50 countries, representing more than 1,200 artists.
Art New York
This year, Art New York will display the most iconic work from the modern, post-war, and pop eras. Featured artists will include artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Willem de Kooning, and Ed Ruscha.
“This will be our most exciting year yet,” Katelijne De Backer, the Director of Art New York, claims, “In addition to high quality blue chip works, we will be offering some truly unique immersive experiences, which promise to engage seasoned and new collectors alike. Art New York will be the perfect launch to New York Art Week, showcasing the most important works from the masters to the emerging artists ready to take fairgoers by storm.”
Among them, Long-Sharp Gallery will display Jason Myers’ installation of portraits titled, The 99%: United We Stand. The work is intended to portray the faceless, nameless members of the 99% in solidarity. A portion of the sales will be donated to Direct Relief, a humanitarian aid organization dedicated to improving the health and lives of people affected by emergencies and poverty.
Amarist Studio will present an installation titled, Welcome. The work is comprised of a light bulb within a mesh of gold razor wire. It intends to literally shine a light on the current refugee crisis. All proceeds from Welcome will be donated to USA for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.
CONTEXT New York
CONTEXT New York will present works with themes related to our current social issues.
“The fair will highlight a selection of work by emerging and mid-career artists that are primed to become contemporary masters within the next few years,” said Julian Navarro, the Director of CONTEXT New York. “The artists for this year’s special projects are taking a vested interest in social awareness and are putting forth works that will drive visitors to ask questions and to participate in the ever-changing social conversation.”
Accola Griefen Gallery will display the work of Marie Watt, an American artist and a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians. Her art is influenced by the history and beliefs of her tribe. At CONTEXT New York, her larger works, which are made in “sewing circles”, will be showcased.
Pablo Helguera, an acclaimed artist and the Director of MoMA’s Adult and Academic Programs, also will present a series of conceptual, socially engaged works titled, All Proceeds. True to the name, one hundred percent of the sales will go towards various organizations supporting social issue causes, including American Civil Liberties Union, City Meals on Wheels, National Network for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Planned Parenthood, and United We Dream.
This will be the third edition of Art New York and second edition of CONTEXT New York. Don’t miss out!
Art New York and CONTEXT New York will be open between Wednesday, May 3rd and Sunday, May 7th, kicking off New York Art Week. Both events will be held at Pier 94.
