Many people will notice that they can recall every last detail of the birth of a child or their wedding, but then can't remember what they ate for breakfast that morning. According to a paper in Nature Neuroscience, this is because the brain tends to retain information from emotionally charged events in greater detail.
So the next time you criticize yourself for forgetting something, remember that your emotional state at the time may have a lot to do with it!
