On almost every university brochure nowadays, they always make sure to include a phrase about how diverse their student body is. However, I never truly understood what that meant until coming to college.
During orientation week of freshman year, I met people from all over the world with such different backgrounds that I had never previously encountered. I was able to easily get along with and learn from my new friends, and even till today, my appreciation for them has come from the heart. Yes, it definitely was a step up from my "diverse" high school, but I ended freshman year wanting more. I understand how far universities have come in accepting students of color, but it's not enough. We are still a minority.
