Areyoureallyhappy?

Are you really happy?

After I get this new job, I'll be happy. Once I get my degree, I'll be happy. In order for me to be happy, I have to find a boyfriend. I've heard these expressions time after time, including from myself. Suddenly, I realized that I have been compromising my own happiness by thinking this way. I heard once that happiness is an inside job. I think that we have all bought into the illusion that happiness is an outside thing at some point. We like to think that only after we get this new thing we are chasing we can stop and finally be truly happy. I've came to realize that the only approval I should be seeking is from myself. There are so many things that I feel like I need to be doing in order to be growing because growth will help me "arrive" to happiness. I realize now that this is incorrect. I was astonished to have come across a picture frame at work that read, "happiness is not a destination, it is a journey." Surely I have heard this before, but in this exact moment,  it was exactly what I needed to be reminded about. Happiness can't be something I'm chasing or I will always be chasing after something I already have. There are so many suggestions for happiness, but ultimately, the only thing that is 100 percent effective is to do what you love. I found myself the other day thinking about starting to run again, but until I had time for it. Finally, I realized that Im not a fixed person, I have flexibility and I can create my own life the way I want to live it. Some days I run in the morning, other days I run in the evening. Figuratively speaking, instead of watching out the window and wishing I was outside, all I have to do is walk outside. I've also made it a routine for myself that once I get home from either work or the gym to look up at the sky and stare into the beauty. It reminds me to think big and that the world bigger than I like to imagine.
