ABC of how to start a home based embroidery business.

We have all heard the quote “Do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life”, but few of us have been able to make that a reality. Not all hobbies or talents are things that we can use for monetary gain or to create financial freedom, thankfully embroidery is one those talents that can be quite lucrative. Learning how to start a home based embroidery business is as simple as learning your ABCs if you follow these easy tips.

Choose the Right Embroidery Machine For You

This is a very important step that you do not want to overlook. Choosing the best embroidery machine for you can make or break your business. You will want to make sure that you choose a machine that allows you to connect to your computer and has software that will produce designs. Make sure to choose a machine that will suit the kind of work you want to take on and comes with software that will allow you to make your own designs. And as always, make sure that your new embroidery machine comes with a warranty (don’t forget to register your device, as this is often needed for the warranty to be valid), that they have a good support line and offer some kind of training with your new machine.

Tip: My recommendation for the the best all-rounder and the bestselling embroidery machine is the Brother SE400. Check out my review of Brother SE400 embroidery machine here

Know Your Clients

The second step is to know your clients. Figure out if you plan to sell your items online , out of your home, at local craft shows, or perhaps you will utilize all of those options. If you are only going to sell your items locally, make sure that you figure out what population of people in your area will be most likely to utilize your services. For example if you live in a college town, you will want to make sure that you advertise in areas that the college kids hang out at. Make sure that you learn how to embroider the school's emblem and mascot, as that is a very popular way to personalize items for college kids.

Always Be Creative

The most important step to ensure success when starting your own sewing and embroidery business is to Always Be Creative! People enjoy getting their possessions embroidered because they want to be fashionable, unique or have things personalized. The more creative you are, the more options you can offer your customers. You will want to make sure that you have plenty of templates and examples made up to show prospective clients. You can find ideas and inspiration for embroidery everywhere.

Make sure that you have things that children, teenagers and adults of all ages will enjoy. The broader your designs, the more customers you will attract. Word of mouth is very important with any business that deals with rationalization or crafts. This means you will also want to do some networking. The best way to do this is to find some apparel and embroidery associations in your area or online, attending trade shows will also be a fantastic way for you to network and stay up to date on all the popular trends.
