5 Benefits of Sleeping in a Recliner Chair

If you own a recliner, you know how great it can feel to sink into it after a long day at work. Kicking off your shoes and putting your feet up is the perfect way to relax. Maybe you’ve even drifted off a time or two, not realizing you fell asleep until hours later!

But did you know that your body can benefit from sleeping in a recliner? Read on to find out how.

Reduces Back Pain

Standing (or sitting) all day puts a lot of pressure on a person’s spine. Whether you are a dockworker or a computer programmer, an achy back after a long day’s work can keep you up all night in a traditional bed. Sleeping in a recliner, however, can offer some respite. The pressure on your spine is relieved, letting your core muscles relax and alleviating those annoying aches. This is particularly beneficial if you are hunched over at a computer or desk all day. Reclining allows your spine to assume the opposite position, offering more relief from back pain than a regular bed.

Boosts Respiratory Function

Sleeping in a recliner also boosts respiratory function. The diaphragm, a sheet of muscle used for breathing, has an easier time fully contracting with the help of gravity. Thus, you can take deeper and fuller breaths while reclining than in a bed. This can be especially helpful to people who suffer from sleep apnea. This condition causes the esophagus to relax, which restricts a person’s airways during their sleep. While reclining, this is not as likely to occur, which reduces symptoms.

Enhances Circulation

Throughout the day, gravity causes blood to build up in your feet and ankles. This can cause swelling and pain that a recliner can soothe. When you lay back and put your feet up, gravity’s effects are not as pronounced – allowing the excess blood to easily circulate. This enhanced flow can lower the risk of a heart attack, as well as provide relief to those suffering from circulation-related problems. Additionally, the greater oxygen intake that comes with better breathing is more efficiently distributed throughout the body.

Alleviates Symptoms

Sleeping in a recliner can also alleviate symptoms of common ailments such as acid reflux. Acid reflux is a condition in which stomach acid enters the esophagus, causing a burning feeling in your chest known as heartburn. This can happen quite easily in a bed, especially if you have eaten recently. In a recliner, however, this is far less likely to occur. The acid would have to work against gravity to enter your throat. Therefore, even if you have eaten recently, sleeping in a recliner can provide relief from heartburn without using antacids.

Reduces Stress

This is perhaps the most important benefit of sleeping in a recliner. Stress makes everything worse – especially other health problems. Aside from the previously-mentioned benefits, recliners reduce stress through simple relaxation. Due to their adjustable nature, you can find the perfect sleeping position right away instead of tossing and turning, or struggling with pillow positioning. This leads to more sleep, which is one of the best stress reducers of all!

No matter who you are, or what job you do, you can get a better night’s rest in a recliner. Your body will benefit from the reduced pain, boosted breathing, enhanced blood flow, lessened symptoms, and reduced stress a recliner provides!
