Dear President Trump,
As the newly elected leader of the US, you undoubtedly have power over the women's healthcare issues all over the world. On January 23rd, you exercised this power by re-enacting the "Global Gag" Rule that bans federal funding for international NGOs that offer abortions. A day later, the House passed the Hyde Amendment law that bans the use of federal funds to subsidize or pay for abortions. I implore you, President Trump, to stop for a moment and consider the real impacts of these actions on women's health care in the US and all around the world. These international NGOs that you barred funding from are responsible for combating HIV/AIDS and developing maternal and child nutrition in various developing countries. Additionally, the Hyde Amendment has been proven to disproportionately impact low-income women and women of color who rely on Medicaid for insurance.
Overall, no matter the implications, the fact is that banning abortions does not stop them for happening - it just makes them unsafe. Women all across the world – from a small village in Peru to New York City – deserve the right to choose what happens to their own bodies. Instead of enacting legal and economic barriers to women’s healthcare access, as a father, husband and empathetic citizen, you should be protecting and standing up for women and young girls all over the world. Do not let religious divisions, cultural stigmas and partisan politics impact any woman’s decisions over her body.
