Mr. President #ReadMyLips

Dear President Trump,

I didn't like either major candidate for President, so I won't lie, I didn't vote for you. However, when you won I said, "Let’s give him a chance!" I got in the middle of both sides and said, "Hey, MOST people voted for Trump because he is different, NOT because he is a racist or bigot, and not because the voters are racist or bigoted."

I assume because your affluent background you probably have rubbed shoulders with many people from many different backgrounds and beliefs. As I've seen from your past you aren't really all that conservative, or backwards. I have a hard time believing you either lived your whole life as a lie or decided to adopt these views in the last few years.

Again, because I was trying to be open minded, and give you a chance (hey - that is what progressives are about, by the way), so I watched your Inauguration. You gave me a little hope because during your Inaugural Address you said you would be the president of all Americans, and you will give the power back to us. In the moment I was pleasantly surprised, we had common ground! However, my surprise soon turned to disgust when you decided your first couple weeks in office to go on a really ugly and pointed Executive Order spree. Executive Orders during the Obama administration was met with criticism and twitter rants on your part (but it is okay when you do it). I don't do well with hypocrisy, Mr. President.

One order walks back the rights and hope of our native people who still to this day suffer and fight for survival. Their culture as survived by the skin of their teeth. Our government has done all it can to snuff out our native peoples and your Executive Order shows your business ties are too strong, even as president, to cut.

Another order which will forever be a huge blemish in your administration is your #MuslimBan. The order was poorly executed and targeted doctors, teachers, mothers, husbands, wives, and grandparents. Have you seen the profile of a terrorist? Have you looked at the flags that usually appear before an individual gets involved in terror? These people have been working parts of our society and they were given undue heartache and troubles. Thank God for our justice system, they fought back against you.

I say what I say, Mr. President, not to be a jerk. I believe in our representative government. I believe our Founders did it this way so all people will be heard. Not just the rich. Not just the white. Not just the affluent. Our congress is how YOU become a great president. Our congress is how you win the support of the people. Think back to how the Democrats got the favor of the American people, it was through Republican opposition to their agenda that Democrats won steep increases. If something gets stuck in congress, it then doesn't become your fault, it becomes extreme partisanships fault. Extreme partisan beliefs are killing this country.

I grew up being a staunch republican (I’ve since moved on from the party). I grew up middle class and we did okay. I never had an abortion but I used Planned Parenthood and other organizations like it for birth control. Now with Obamacare birth control is very cheap and I can pay without those organizations. I need birth control to stay alive, I need it to keep from having a hysterectomy in my 20’s. When I was a single mother I went back to work as soon as I could, my children had to go without me. I worked 70 hours a week some weeks, and still couldn’t make ends meet. Childcare was hard to come by, childcare assistance was too, I’ve had babysitters quit and I had to leave jobs over it. As a mother our first priority is our children and keeping a roof over our head, I had to get assistance while working. I didn’t have enough for food, rent, bills, diapers, formula, gas, car etc. Without government assistance I would have lost everything. It allowed me the ability to have food in the home. It subsidized my bills, I was able to get a little nest egg. However, every little setback would bring us back down to nothing.

Now that I am married, a lot of those issues are gone, my health has now become an issue. With severe health issues I need parts of Obamacare still. No, the bill isn’t perfect, it did make some parts of healthcare really annoying, too many loops to jump through, and a lot of really inconvenient and weird rules that makes finding providers difficult. However, I am insured! I wouldn’t be without it. It is a preexisting condition that would have not been covered. I would be forced to go into debt, then eventually give up because of the cost, and die if the disease progresses further. My children would then be without their mother, and my husband without his wife.

I give you my history because I understand your base, I was your base at one time…

But as someone who woke up, let me tell you, your job as president isn't to adhere to the extreme wing of your party (and this is true for every president), your job as president is to put country before party, before business, before ego.

Please be a great president. Please do the right things. Please go through congress and let the people have their country back.

Thank you,

Britney Smitley

I am super excited and I support any move that the president does that seems to have a clear betterment for people, not just a party or ideal. I wish when I was younger there was more of an effort to reach young women and bring them into STEM education and work... Now at 29 I often think how amazing it would be to work in a lab or sending probes out into space. Women who do this kind of work are utterly amazing and great role models for girls! I suppose that is why I've taken up writing now, I get to delve into many things, including the sciences and technology sectors without having to go back and get an all new degree! LOL
