On November 1st the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical giant Merck issued a sobering report, “Global Burden of Cancer in Women.” The number of women who will die from cancer each year, according to the new report, will rise from 3.5 million in 2012 to 5.5 million in 2030, an increase of almost 60 percent in two decades. Cancer already kills one in seven women worldwide, making it the second highest cause of death after cardiovascular disease among the female sex. The fact is that many forms of cancer are preventable. But too many women do not have access to the health care they need. We need to find new ways to provide the preventative care women need to stay healthy -- and the treatment women need if they become sick!
