I started reading Conscious Company magazine about a year ago and I have been continually impressed and inspired about their articles on socially responsible businesses. As someone who is also interested in public policy, I found this article to be a positive call to action for socially responsible businesses to work together to create more sustainable and effective policies. I found it eye-opening to learn that an extremely well-branded and successful company like Patagonia is leading to enact policy change to protect the outdoors. I am hopeful that other companies will follow Patagonia’s example to create policies leading to a safer and more stable environment.

An interesting article clarifying the importance of conscious leadership in our society. The article describes an extremely important element of conscious leadership as acting. While pursuing conscious leadership, it is important to remember how we want our values to be transcribed in both small and large ways. The article states “It’s our duty to carry forward the important causes of the world without fear of reprisal or judgement.” A large discrepancy exists between contemplating and caring about issues and following through with innovations and practices that can change or improve upon certain injustices. I appreciate Conscious Company’s mission to be the voice of expressing the value of sustainable businesses and value-based conscious leadership

An insightful article on the issue of food waste in America and how it has largely become an issue of aesthetics. In the whirlwind of social media, including popular food Instagram’s and dedicated food bloggers, our culture has largely become obsessed with the way in which our food looks. As stated in the article “Fruits and vegetables, in addition to generally being healthful, tend to bruise, brown, wilt, oxidize, ding or discolor” leading many grocery stores to routinely trash fresh produce for being the wrong shape or not a good aesthetic. I believe it is time to think about what we can do to change the narrative about what constitutes as attractive aesthetics for fresh produce to reduce the amount of food wasted in America.
