What is your backstory?
I’m a 50% rebel 50% nerd who graduated college at 19 and had nothing better to do. I cultivated a lot of non-committal jobs while writing on the side, until I got a job as a writer at one of the biggest advertising agencies in the country.
I got tired of that too; I hated the office politics and the dress code. So I quit it after almost a year, played professional poker, and then wrote on the side. I had a lot of experience doing public speaking so on the side, I would accept hosting/ emcee opportunities. When I started doing bigger and bigger events, that’s when I learned I could make so much more if I was the one doing the event.
Now, 7 years later, my events and PR company is still my biggest business, and we have led campaigns for over 100 brands including corporate giants such as Sony, AirAsia, Sharp, BMW, Bosch, Hafele, and Alcatel.
If someone would want to emulate your career, what would you suggest are the most important things to do?
Always remember that NOTHING IS IN THE WAY. Use your adversities to your advantage. If you only see the obstacle, you will not get to where you want to be. But if you see it as a way, then you’ll definitely get there. Even faster than you think.
Learn how to compartmentalize personal life and work. Both should properly exist to become a fulfilled human being (whatever “life” and “work” means for you).
Proper communication can bring you a lot of success. Know what to say, how to say it, in the right time, at the right places. Learn public speaking, proper business correspondence, negotiation, and humor. Use all of these in business and you’ll be more successful than most people out there.
Believe that you can “have it all”. But “all” depends on you. Don’t let other people define success for you. Just do what makes you feel like the best version of yourself, and you’ll get to where you want to be sooner than you think.
What are the most exciting projects you are working on now?
I am currently at the 2nd month of my new business – Prime Press—where we get influencers, entrepreneurs, and high level consultants on big online publications so they can boost prospect and investor credibility, justify premium prices, and improve team morale.
Another exciting project I’m working on is my second TEDx event—this time I’m the lead organizer, not a speaker!—which will be held in my hometown, Davao city, Philippines. I’m excited to bring extraordinary thinkers together!
