Hi Moguls! Meet Jo Yarranton, Vice President of Corporate Human Resources.
Check out her story below and see how she's been a key influencer at Stanley Black & Decker!
How did your career started at Stanley Black & Decker? I started in Black & Decker (as it was back then) in 2006 on a three-month interim assignment in the tools business in Europe. I had three job offers at the time. I hadn’t really found my “work home” where I felt I fit the culture. Someone told me I would fit in at Black & Decker …and they were right! I interviewed companies before I picked one. To me it was not about salary, benefits, promotion – it was where I could be myself.
What has been vital to your success in general and more specifically, here at Stanley Black & Decker? Having a strong team around me and the ability to make change for the better of the company. Being solutions-focused gives you a lot of creative freedom. If something isn’t working – be part of the solution to get it changed. Embrace diversity and value the opinions of others. And network, network, network!!
What do you do in your current role? Head up Human Resources for all of corporate globally – managing the matrix to ensure communication and alignment across the functions. Primarily supporting corporate finance, linking to business unit finance teams, and partnering with Don Allan EVP & CFO. Learning to navigate Industry 4.0 and Advanced Data Analytics and keeping everything moving in corporate from a talent perspective. Making sure we have the talent in place to take the company to our 22/22 goal.
What has been your most impactful experience? Definitely the opportunity to relocate for seven years to the US – working in World Headquarters and expanding my career scope in corporate. Understanding the external pressures on the company and how having a winning team can influence performance.
Who and/or what helped get you to where you are today? I was lucky in that I had two great sponsors who gave me the opportunity to be exposed to the senior team. That and a sense of humor. Learning not to sweat the small stuff also helps. We have a saying in corporate: “We’ll figure it out”, and we always do.
Any advice? Aim to give others the same exposure and opportunity you've had.
