Why are cosmetics with food grade ingredients on the rise?

Recent skincare trends for both men and women in the developed countries show a significant preference for the organic and natural brands. In the United Kingdom, for instance, 50 percent of British men are convinced that skincare products made with natural ingredients are better. Meanwhile, half of the consumers in Germany, Italy, and France want vitamins in the skincare products they buy.

The United States is the biggest market for natural and organic cosmetics in the world. It is followed closely by Germany in terms of overall demand.

The preferences of American consumers can be broken down into four categories. About 42 percent of consumers prefer natural ingredients; 62 percent of them want skincare items that have undergone dermatological testing; 51 percent prefer beauty products intended for sensitive skin; and, 32 percent of buyers want goods to be certified as organic.

Consumers are now recognizing the benefits of natural organic beauty ingredients and manufacturers are taking notice. In 2016, the global market for organic beauty products was valued at US$ 11.06 billion. It is now projected to grow up to US$ 21.78 by 2024. This category includes goods that have food grade ingredients.

Reasons for the growing trend

This growing trend could be attributed to three main reasons, namely, health considerations, ethical issues and environmental concerns.

1. Health

Health issues are the primary considerations when choosing skincare and beauty items. In the United States, the regulations on organic cosmetic products (including those that contain food-grade ingredients) are stricter compared to those that are labeled only as cosmetics.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enforces two major laws in regulating cosmetics. These are the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA).

Meanwhile, organic cosmetics also fall under the jurisdiction of and the Agricultural Marketing Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). This government agency enforces the National Organic Program (NOP), which includes the definition of the term “organic” and certification thereof. This means that certified organic cosmetics are safer because of stricter regulations.

2. Ethics

Some consumers are also increasingly becoming more aware of ethical considerations. For instance, the willingness to pay more for cosmetics that are not tested on animals is an example of ethical consumerism. This is usually motivated by the desire to turn their emotional reactions into actions. People who are vegans or those who have deep sympathy for animals would tend to be ethical consumers.

3. Environment

Manufacturing these goods comparably has lower carbon footprints and more sustainable. The ingredients can easily be grown from the local farms or even from the backyard gardens or company greenhouses. This means that the ingredients need not be transported very far. The plant materials also serve as carbon sinks.

Food grade ingredients

The health, ethical and environmental concerns of consumers are addressed by products that have food grade ingredients. These ingredients are defined as defined to be having qualities that are sufficient for food production purposes. This means that these ingredients are safe to be eaten.

Only a few manufacturers of beauty products use food grade ingredients. Aside from the fact that the regulations for these ingredients are comparably stricter, the startup costs of product research, development and mass production can also be prohibitive.

One of the well-known companies that cater to the demand for organic products is Saavy Naturals. The company was founded by husband and wife, Hugo & Debra Saavedra. The company is now a subsidiary of Trimax Corporation (OTCMKTS:TMXN).

The husband-and-wife team has a strong background in food cultivation and services. They have owned and operated restaurants that served exotic foods. They have years of experience in growing edible flowers and herbs. They then decided to experiment on these organic ingredients to be included in the creation of luxurious soaps, body creams, and body scrubs.

Saavy Naturals offers a wide range of organic body care and hair care products as well as hemp-based botanical brands. The company recently closed a deal with Walmart to be a supplier of organic products to the superstore chain.

The Walmart deal is a significant step in the distribution of Saavy Naturals’ goods. More consumers will now have access to these items.

Meanwhile, for do-it-yourselfers, milk baths, avocado face masks, strawberry teeth whiteners, cucumber eye pads and citrus coffee body scrubs are just some of the example of food/ingredients that you can make and use in your beauty regimen. You can easily find these ingredients in your local supermarkets.

Healthy food items are rich in vitamins, minerals, amino acids and flavonoids (antioxidants) are not only excellent sources of nutrients but also essential for maintaining a youthful and beautiful body inside and out. These food items help the body boost the immune system and prevent or help repair cellular damage. If applied on skin, most of these food items can have positive effects in terms of rejuvenation and promotion of healing.

@Bethany Heinrich Thanks! Oh there are so many! I personally find Korres, RMS beauty, Saavy Naturals, Origins, Becca are among my (many, many) favourites. Nowadays, there are many brands from various countries that are not as well known but are great finds and could work for various skin types. Here's a good list that can help us explore: https://www.crueltyfreekitty.com/ultimate-guide-to-cruelty-free-makeup/

This is so well-written and informative! I personally try to only buy things that are cruelty-free, and the more natural, the better. It's also so easy to forget that our skin is an organ, and it absorbs what we put on it, so we should always be cognizant of that.
