A three-year-old Indian girl is in critical condition after she was reportedly raped by her neighbor in Delhi.
The man who allegedly raped the child was a 40-year-old security guard who worked in the building the child was in. He has been arrested. The child was found unconscious and rushed to a local hospital where she is currently in surgery. The incident occurred on Sunday, which marked the anniversary of a brutal gang rape of a student on a bus in Delhi. Delhi Women's Commissioner Swati Maliwal said the horrific incident "let down" the rape victim, whose attack prompted protests across India and tighter rape laws.
Locals in the region found the suspect and attacked him after the incident was made public, according to the Times of India. Police were quoted as saying that the accused was being treated for injuries before arrest.
The girl's parents were working when the incident happened. The suspect allegedly lured the girl with candy and picked her up from her home. Police registered a case for rape under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, which could see the suspect receive the death penalty.
A child under 16 is raped every 155 minutes, and a child under 10 is raped every 13 hours in India. The number of rapes of children increased from 8,541 in 2012 to 19,765 in 2016. Over 10,000 children were raped in 2015. 240 million women in India were married before they were 18.
When will this stop happening?
Post on your social media: "A 3-year-old - a child - was brutally raped by a 40-year-old in India. I demand an immediate investigation into this horrific event and harsh punishments for those who committed this crime. We also demand that the government immediately creates a bona fide system that legitimately and thoroughly investigates rape cases."
Protest! Here's how you can organize an excellent demonstration.
