In my teens, I had this idea that when I start working and earning for myself, I will make sure that I visit one new place each year. In the years since I graduated and got into the whole 9 to 5 to sometimes 9 to infinity routine, an annual vacation started looking more like a task to prepare for.
The whole of 2018 went behind work and other mundane things. I did go on trips and treks that kept me sane, but, there was no week long vacation to a new place. At 26, I was not living up to hope my my 18-year-old self.
Something had to be done. And so my bags were packed. On a May day, I went off to explore the beautiful Himachal Pradesh. This was my first time visiting the northern state that I had heard so much about. For the first time after a long while, I felt thrilled. In all honesty, the week before my holiday, I was drowning in work. The pressure of finishing my work before I left consumed me enough that I did not give a lot of thought to what all new adventures I would embark upon once I get there. I was in office the day I was suppose to leave with my luggage in the office store room. Trust me, this is not something I recommend. You have a life. Please live it.
The moment I hit send on the last email and left the building to board my train was not the moment left work behind. I think I finally let myself believe that I was on a vacation when the train to New Delhi started. Yup. As I looked out the window, with each passing station I felt a growing sense of relief, which was strange to me. Strange because I love my job. It is something that I enjoy doing and the people around me are exciting and supportive. However, in my conquest to deliver better work, I had forgotten about balance. I am pretty sure I am not the only one. Everyone needs a break.
Sometimes, when we get to do work that we are good at, and it is something that we enjoy, we tend to forget about balance. Vacation time is not necessarily an escape of sorts. It is in my perspective, a way to let the mind relax and declutter. The world outside is beautiful and we should take some time to explore it. Trust me, it is worth it!
Just take that Vacation already!
