Money. Few words have the power to evoke deep and complex emotions in us. The way you think about money has almost complete control over how you live most of your life. If you think about money as a tool, you'll find ways to build it up, conserve it, and use it wisely. But if you think about money as something to immediately spend on your pleasures and comforts and become a slave to needing more and more, you will live in a constant state of scarcity.
The funny thing about money is that it's not about how much you make, it's about what you do with what you make. There are people in our world who earn a very high income, but because of the way they think about money and because of the things they want in life, they end up quite poor and never have enough.
To change the way money works in your life, you must first change your mindset. Here are five ways to shift your money mindset from scarcity to abundance.
It's all about what you spend
It's not the money you make, it's the money you keep that determines the abundance of money and fulfillment in your life. Too often we aim to earn more simply so that we can spend more, but this usually ends up in an equilibrium of earning and spending, or sometimes even debt. What's the point of earning $250,000 a year if you spend $250,000 a year?
An abundance mindset is a mindset that says, “I will make sure to live in a way that I will always have more than I need and always have a reservoir to draw from.”
It's not what you make, it's what you keep.
Believe in your power to create value
Shifting your money mindset from scarcity to abundance means changing your conception about where money comes from, and how much you control the flow of money in your life.
In our world’s system, we exchange money for value. If a product or service offers a certain value to us, we give money to the source of that product or service in order to get what we want. To have an abundance mindset, you have to realize that you are a source of tremendous potential value that can be exchanged for money. You have skills and abilities that can be augmented and improved in order to create more value, and thus more money.
If you only believe that you will be able to earn what you've always been able to earn, you will stay in a mindset of scarcity. But if you choose to believe that you can always add more skills, more knowledge, and more value to yourself, and then be compensated in accordance, you will have the tools you need to have an abundance mindset for wealth creation.
Believe that money is meant for you, and that you are meant to make the world better with it
Some people don't believe that they deserve to be wealthy. They think that riches are only reserved for highly gifted, talented, or lucky people, and that they will never be one of them. This is just a self-fulfilling prophecy: if you don't believe you are deserving of wealth or destined for wealth, you will behave in a way that prevents you from ever having it.
However, if you believe that you are as deserving as anyone else of wealth, and moreover that you are a person who has the capacity for serving and pouring out to the world with well, you will begin to think and behave in ways that push you toward accumulating wealth and using it as a tool for greatness.
Believe that this world has plenty of resources, and they are yours for the taking
The simple truth is that this world has more money and valuable resources then you could possibly comprehend. An abundance mindset is rooted in, well, abundance! And this world has no shortage of it. Some of that abundance is meant for you, and you must believe that you should and will go and secure it.
Money makes a terrible master but a wonderful servant
One important mindset you must have in order to move from scarcity to abundance is to pursue wealth without letting wealth become your slave master. Money on its own will amplify the darkest parts of who you are if you're not careful, and the great paradox of accumulating money is that the more you get of it, the more you will want. This is why it's important to learn to make money the servant of something greater in your life, instead of making money the single and only hope of your life.
You will live in a mindset and state of abundance when you've learned to accumulate money to fulfill your mission and work, instead of lusting after money to spend on an unquenchable thirst for your own comforts and pleasures. When money becomes a servant of something greater, it tends to become yours in abundance.
How you think and feel about money is one of the most significant and controlling elements of who you are. Don't succumb to a mindset of scarcity and desperation, as you will tend to manifest in your life what you think about most. Instead, trust in the abundance and power of money to become a tool for something greater, and your mindset, effort, and results will change for the better.
