In 1998, when the whole Bill-Monica-inappropriate-Oval-Office-relationship-thing -- cigar and all -- aired itself across the airwaves and newspapers, our children learned the word fellatio and for many innocent youngsters, they learned for the first time what oral sex was. When I was growing up, we certainly didn’t learn stuff like that from mainstream media or coming out of the White House. We learned it on the streets, in the bedroom, and later on in our college Sex Education classes.
Fast forward twenty years, and now our kids are learning a whole host of other choice words and expressions from the nightly news, many of these coming out of the mouth of our current President. Among these colorful words and expressions are: “grab’em by the pussy,” shithole, and golden showers. When I read Newsday today, a paper I have been reading for more than fifty years, I was amazed to read the following words, allegedly spoken by our President in a meeting in the Oval Office on Thursday, “Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” I almost choked on my breakfast. It wasn’t the word shithole that bothered me, (although I have never seen a newspaper put this word in print). No one uses profanity more than me, so curse words don’t flinch me in the least. It was the blatant disrespect for the people of Haiti and other African nations that shocked me. I really don’t think the young people of our country need to think that it’s acceptable to speak disparagingly about different cultures and people around the world.
I can imagine that we will see a great deal more offensive, deeply disrespectful words and phrases in 2018. Parents: be prepared to explain them to your children. Do take a moment to have a serious talk with them about how important it is for all of us to watch out words and to be respectful of others.
I wonder if shithole will be the 2018 Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year?
