NYC Media Summit Held at the National Black Theater on May 10, 2018

On Thursday, May 10th, the New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) hosted the first-ever "Made in NY" Media Summit in Harlem. The Media Summit is an opportunity for New Yorkers and area residents to connect with entertainment industry professionals and engage with thought leaders during a free day of programs co-produced by MOME and Harlem-based cultural and media organizations. Held at the National Black Theatre, the day-long Media Summit will feature industry talks and a resource fair for New Yorkers interested in the media and entertainment industry.

The Media Summit program was as follows:

9 – 9:10 am: Welcome Remarks
9:10 – 10:00 am: Sound Tracks in Music (in partnership with National Jazz Museum in Harlem) – Music industry executives and artists will discuss new modes of distribution and promotion and how to navigate the changing technological landscape for music creation and distribution. Panelists include:
Nelson George (Moderator) – Cultural critic, author, filmmaker
Cynthia Johnson – Vice President of Urban Promotion, Columbia Records/Sony Music Group
Jennifer Justice – VP, Corporate Development, Superfly, former attorney to Jay-Z
Ryan Maloney – Director of Program and Education, National Jazz Museum in Harlem
Ken Spellman – Founder, The Broadcast Academy, Inc.

10 – 10:50 am: Sound Tracks in Music II (in partnership with National Jazz Museum in Harlem) – Music industry executives and artists will discuss the music industry as it relates to the TV/film industry in NYC. Panelists include:
Loren Schoenberg (Moderator) – Founding Director and Senior Scholar, National Jazz Museum in Harlem
Angela Yee – Radio personality, co-host of "The Breakfast Club"
Mitch Frohman – Award-Winning Saxophonist/Flutist
Claude Mitchell – Senior Music Director, ESPN
Bill Stephney – CEO of OvrDo Media, Universal Hip Hop Museum Founding Board Member

11 – 11:50 am: "Harlem World" I: Harlem In Theory (in partnership with The City College of New York, Dept. of Media and Communication Arts) – Media scholars and content creators discuss the role of Harlem as a character in NYC-based film/TV/music and in the cultural imaginary. Panelists include:
Prof. Michael Gillespie (Moderator) – Dept. of Media Communication Arts, The City College of New York
Prof. Jamal Joseph – Professor at Columbia University Graduate School of the Arts / Executive Artistic Director, IMPACT Repertory Theatre
Shola Lynch – Curator of Moving Image and Recorded Sound Division, Schomburg Center
Prof. Paula Massood – Dept. of Film and Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, Brooklyn College

11:50 am – 12:40 pm: "Harlem World" II: Harlem On Screen (in partnership with Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and Black Filmmaker Foundation (BFF)) – Industry thought leaders, academics, and cultural critics screen clips from TV/film projects based in or featuring Harlem and discuss their cultural resonance. Panelists include:

Warrington Hudlin – President, Black Filmmaker Foundation (BFF)
Neema Barnette – Founder, Harlem Girl Production Corporation
Nelson George – Cultural critic, author, filmmaker

12 – 2 pm: Lunch (catered by FreshDirect) and "Made in NY" Resource Fair

2 – 3:30 pm: "Made in NY" Screenwriters' Showcase (in partnership with Urbanworld Film Festival, WGA-East and The Black List) –Screenwriting showcase presenting table reads of screenplay and television pilot excerpts from select emerging screenwriters and discussion. Sponsored by the Will and Jada Smith Family Foundation (WJSFF) and featuring Master of Ceremonies, Caleeb Pinkett.

4 – 5 pm: "How to Shoot in NYC" – Content creators, film finance experts, local elected officials and MOME staff discuss how to navigate the various elements required to shoot a project in NYC and the economic and social impact of film production activity in Harlem. Panelists include:

Hon. Brian Benjamin – NY State Senator, 30th Senate District

5 pm – Closing Remarks

This was the first annual event of this kind and with the apparent success, there is sure to be another summit held next year.
