When I found out I was pregnant with twin boys, my family was so excited and happily planning for my late August delivery. All of that excitement turned to fear and panic when I started labor on May 17. At only 27 weeks' gestation, it was the furthest thing from my mind—but there I was, in an ambulance, being rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital.
Upon arrival, I was hooked up to the Philips M1350B fetal monitor, a product that I supported in Business Development, as well as Philips OB TraceVue. I was able to keep the babies in a little longer, but they still arrived too early, at just 29 weeks. The babies, Andrew and Alex, were rushed to the NICU, both with teams of nurses, doctors, and respiratory therapists.
Within 24 hours of their birth, baby A, Andrew, was diagnosed with a rare, drug-resistant E. coli, as well as full-blown sepsis. Baby B, Alex, was also diagnosed with full-blown sepsis. My husband and I couldn't even hold them; we could only sit by their warmers, pray and cry.
A week after they were born, I received a call from an Account Manager with Philips Children's Medical Ventures. They had heard about our situation and had called to ask the hospital permission to come and visit me and the boys.
They brought bags full of Philips products: wee pacifiers designed for a preemie’s tiny mouth, little positioning aids to make sure the babies had the support they needed to be moved around their warmers, little SnuggleUps, and Bendy Bumpers so that the babies felt secure and safe— and my favorite gift, the Snoedel. A Snoedel is a little blanket that was designed to absorb the scent of the parents so that when we were not with the babies, they would be able to smell us and feel safe.
My Philips ‘family’ rallied around us, in our scariest and darkest hour. As much as Philips products are top of the line, my favorite example of Philips improving lives, are my colleagues, strangers before that day, who came when we needed them.
Today, I am planning my twins 10th birthday party!
