History Question

The goal of human history is like the goal of the history of anything or anyone. For instance, you youself have a history. You stated by being born, you learn't to talk, walk and function, and you matured to the age you are today. All the while you have been learning and becoming better. Similarly all throughout human history we have matured, learn't, improved, gotten skills and technology and progressed. Therefore there are two purposes to human history.

The first one is to learn and progress. Twenty thousand years ago we were running around in skins, living in caves and although we had learn't to cooperate and live with one and other-this is about all we did learn. We still had the basic rule of force. That is if you wanted something, you took it. This was however somewhat a bit mitigated by circumstances and by human endeavour to live together and cooperate for mutual benifit. Although basically it was the rule of force. Around 5,500-2,500 B.C. we began to experiment in the rule of an organised authority. This was the early Mesopotamian civilizations of Kish, Erech and Larsa. This meant that although force was the rule generally it was organised into structured authorities with rules. About 2,500-1,300 B.C. we had the powers of Babylong, Ur, Lagash, Akkad and Assyria and later Egypt. We now had the concept of a king being the supreme law giver and administrator. We are entering the rule of law. This devoloped through to the Greeks, Romans and up till the modern age. The Greeks taught us about rights and the Romans organised and expanded them. We now learnt and developed the concepts of an individual with rights and responsibilities under the law. And all the while progressing in technology, knowledge and experience. This history has bought at a huge price the lessons that we have learnt up to today and the rights, prosperity, techology and knowledge we have. The purpose of history has been to teach us humans by experience to be better.

The second reason is human development itself. That is the devolopment of humanity-the species to something better. Just as Australapithicus progressed to Habilus to Erectus to Neanderthal to Sapiens-so if you believe in evolution then we must be progressing through natural developement and through the visitudes of history to improve the human itself. And if you believe in literal creation then it is god's will that we progress and learn to attain the perfection of the spirit and of heaven. And if you believe in other theories then the whole point, the whole goal of human history is to go through that which builds character and gives experience to become something better. For betterment is of worth and things of worth have to be earnt. And being earnt-they hurt. They are hard. That is why they are earnt and why they are merited. They have preportary substance. They give us the skill, knowledge, experience and developement that is hard won and therfore of great substance and value.

For the journey also as well as the goal is precious. For in the journey we learn and develope in the magnificant saga of human history. Sure it is cruel. But in life's visitudes it's meaning is the real and the hard. This gives it value. And as in all quests, much of the time, it is not so much the goal that is important, although in this it is, but the journey itself that is many times the real reward and in this time a very great reward. For history's two goals are the journey itself for the glory and substance of experience and the end-the eventual developement. Both journey and end-the twin goals of human history are of paramount importance.

You see, I once saw a movie "The Time Machine"-the new version(although I have also seen the old one) and the hero has gone into the future to find out why he couldn't change the past. He finds out that it is because when he saved his girlfriend he didn't invent the time machine to go back and save her in the first place. Hence when he tried to save her she merely died of a different cause. In other words the true benifit of the quest was the experience itself. Once the goal had sought have been accomplished he found that without the journey-there was no goal. As in human history, no journey-no goal. And we humans have had a glorious history-despite, or even maybe because of it, the vast suffering and misery. We have progressed from the brute rule of force to the rule of authority, through to the rule of law and with individual rights. Perhaps one day we may progress to the precepts of justice and beyond to the gifts of mercy. We have progressed from brutes in the jungle through to understanding beings and civilized one, and technical ones to Homo Sapien Sapiens. Perhaps what awaits us in the future is glorious indeed. But to get to it we must live through to it. We mus live history. This is the purpose, the goal of history-to journey through it and learn and develope to eventual heights of humanity. It is the substance, it is the purpose, it is the goal, it is the glory. For iron's goal is to go through fire to be strengthened to become what it becomes-the eventual goal-iron. For after all iron must go through fire to proove it's worth. Hope this helps

I never had thought that words, such as those in the above essay, would captivate my mind this much. And they also make me think and hope. ut in the end, I would disagree with the author that what I see is not the proof that humanity would go towards glory but more decadence. This is just in my humble opinion. Otherwise, the article is beautifully written though and I wished that I would be able to write like @britnyspeasr.

Well written but there has been more decadence than glory throughout history. What do you think @britnyspeasr?
