Calling all Classical Music Lovers: The Emerson String Quartet Celebrates its 40th Anniversary Season

Those who have been following me know that I have an interview series called Lipps On Life where I talk to extraordinary people who are living their dreams.

My next piece is with Eugene Drucker, Violinist and Founding Member of the Emerson String Quartet.  Eugene is one of the finest musicians in the world.  Hear about his background, education and career, including work as a writer and composer.  As the Quartet kicks off its 6-month tour and celebrates its 40th Anniversary, Eugene reflects on his fondest memories and shares what we can look forward to this Season.  Also, hear in the interview and see below for Eugene's advice for those seeking a career in music.

TAKEAWAYS

Lipps On Life: What advice do you have for musicians looking to have a career?

Eugene:

We always say to young string quartets that the first 4-5 years of a quartet’s existence are the hardest.  There are a lot of forces at play.  First of all, how do you make a living? Chances are, you won’t get very high concert fees to begin with; that might come later if you stick with it.  And then there are the difficulties of adjusting to each other’s playing styles and personal styles as well.

A sense of humor is important and keeping in mind your goals, objectives and ideals/dreams.  It’s important to remember your joint goals and to know that after you’ve gotten through the first 4-5 years of a career you’ll be in a better position to take stock of what you’ve accomplished, what your potential will be and what you might realistically hope to achieve over the next 5 years and beyond.

Lipps On Life: So to keep going

Eugene: Yes

I really like that advice, to stick with it whatever happens in the first 4-5 years. I love listening to classical music, although I'm not the best at playing myself. How exciting to be able to live your dream! This is a great project.

Oh, thank you so much! Your words mean a lot. One of my favorite parts of the interviews is hearing guests' advice. I'm so glad that you like theirs. May we ALL live our dreams! :)

I love this group. I had the chance to see them in college and was blown away. I'm so glad classical groups like this are doing well to keep this sort of music alive for the next generation.

Thanks so much for your comment! I agree that the group is great (how awesome that you got to see them while in school!) and that it's important to keep this genre of music alive for the next generation. Thanks for reading!
