6 Things to Add to a Company-Wide Survey

One of the most essential parts of a business is its employees. Employees can make or break customer satisfaction, and low employee turnover keeps training costs at a minimum. One way to ensure employees are happy and invested in their work is to give them a voice- and actually listen. A great way to do this is through company-wide surveys.

A company survey of its employees may sound like a pain, but the extra work will be well worth the trouble in the end. There are a variety of ways to issue employee surveys, from traditional pen-and-paper to online versions through platforms such as Google Forms or Survey Monkey.

Questions Regarding Enablement

Employees should have the things they need to do their job well. This includes training, technology, equipment, comfortable working conditions, etc. If an employee feels that their employer is eager to provide what they need to do their job well, they will feel capable and confident in their work.

Sample questions include:

Most of the equipment, systems, and processes here support us in doing our work effectively.

I have access to learning and training opportunities needed to perform my job well.

Questions Regarding Engagement

Engagement indicates an employee’s overall satisfaction and happiness for their employer. It also reflects their dedication and loyalty. Happy, loyal employees are valuable and tend to make the work environment a more pleasant place to be.

Sample questions include:

I am motivated to go above and beyond my expected duties.

I would recommend this company as a good place to work.

I am proud to work at this company.

Questions Regarding Leadership

Leadership is an essential part of how a company functions. Without good leadership, the entire organization suffers. It is crucial to see leadership from the eyes of employees, as they often have a more realistic understanding of how the leadership roles work within the company.

Sample questions include:

My manager is a good role model for employees.

I know and understand the vision of the company.

Questions Regarding Development

Employees are more likely to stay with a company if they feel that they have room for growth and further development. Not only is this important for the morale of employees, but it helps keep employees motivated and gives them a long-term vision, keeping them with the company longer.

Sample questions include:

I believe there are good career opportunities at this company.

Someone in management has shown interest in my career goals.

Questions Regarding Alignment

Alignment is when employees know what is expected of them. When employees exceed those expectations, employers should award them appropriately. Employees will not continue to do more than what is required if there is no benefit to them.

Sample questions include:

I receive appropriate recognition when I do good work.

I know how to be successful in my current role.

Open-Ended Questions

Open-ended questions allow employees to provide feedback that was not included in the rest of the survey. Since the primary goal of the survey is to give employees a way to participate in the company and express their opinion, it is important to provide them the avenue in which to do so.

Most surveys should end with open-ended questions to avoid redundant answers or feedback throughout the survey.

Sample questions include:

Is there something else we should have asked in this survey?

What things are we doing well?

What things do we need to improve?
