5 Travel Safety Tips for College Women

Safety is always a consideration when you travel. After all, you don't want to be stuck in a strange place with no money or find yourself dealing with an injury or illness if you can possibly avoid it.

While college is a great time to travel, what with few obligations like a career, a family, or mortgage payments to hold you back. However, you may not have the experience under your belt to make wise decisions where your safety is concerned.

It is especially important for young women to be wary when they travel since they are more likely to become targets for predators.

Here are just a few ways in which you can protect yourself when you decide to travel during college.

1. Share Your Itinerary

When it comes to travel safety, you should start by making sure someone knows where you're going. Entrusting your itinerary to a parent, sibling, or friend means that if something happens to you, someone can give your information to authorities.

Along the same lines, you should set up a schedule to check in with someone back home, whether you call, email, or text daily or when you arrive at different destinations on your trip. If you should get lost, injured, or otherwise waylaid, this ensures that someone will be looking for you.

2. Check Insurance Policies

Most insurance policies are not international. This means that if you eat some bad food and end up in the hospital, contract the flu, or get into a car accident during your travels, you may have to pay out of pocket for medical bills.

The same goes for auto insurance. For this reason, you should call your insurance providers well in advance of your trip to see if you can add temporary insurance to your policies to cover you while you travel. If you're going to drive on your trip, you might also want to buy the extra insurance from the car rental company just to avoid any possible issues.

3. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Even though the Loyola Marymount University campus is safe, wandering around the city of L.A. requires a bit more awareness for safety's sake. The same is true when you travel.

One of the best ways to keep yourself safe, especially when traveling through unfamiliar areas, is to pay attention and use common sense. Watch out for any potential dangers so that you can avoid them.

4. Travel with a Group

A woman traveling alone is always going to be a more tempting target for criminals, so it might be wise to consider traveling with a friend or a group as a safety measure. One of the best ways for students to travel is with a study abroad program that places them in dorms with other students or with local families that can show them around and offer safety tips.

5. Pack Right

If you're earning Maryville's cyber security masters degree online, you're probably used to carrying around a metric ton of books. However, you don't necessarily want to adopt the same mentality when packing for your trip.

The less you bring, the less you could potentially lose along the way, and packing light will make for ease of movement and help you to avoid the aches and pains of carting around more luggage than you really need.
