When apple launched Siri 6 years ago, it revolutionised the way we interact with our mobile devices. It was a digital assistant like no other and paved the way for research in the field of virtual reality. Microsoft’s Cortana, Facebook’s M, Amazon’s Alexa etc. have since been developed. But surprisingly the one who developed it has since been mum with no newer versions of Siri released.

But apple’s Siri was refurbished last year to allow third party apps or Siri apps to activate through siri’s voice command and with a set of whole new features and skills. Finally catching up, the new Siri is a lot friendlier allowing you to book a ride, start tracking a run, or send a payment to a friend.
A sensation when launched, Siri since had been a closed-off service until last year when it was made available to third-party developers. By leveraging third-party services, siri apps are now available which help in building a more nuanced relationship with its master.
A lot has changed since Kittlaus and cheyer, original developers of Siri, left to develop Viv. The company has just announced it will be letting developers bake Siri’s voice functionality into their apps — so users will be able to tap into third-party services just by saying ‘Hey Siri…’.
This is a good day for iOS app developers. iOS users will now be able to call upon other third-party communication services such as WhatsApp and Twitter. With such busy times, more and more people rely on their smartphones to get the job done. With siri apps, one can practically achieve anything all through the comfort of their smartphone. Its the best time for biggies like Apple, Google, Amazon to cash in on this opportunity to expand their business.
One area Apple has focused on in the past to differentiate its approach on the virtual assistant front is user privacy. At WWDC last year it showed off an update to Siri called Proactive that added some Google Now-esque predictive features — such as inferring who might be calling from a landline number that’s not stored in your contacts — except the data processing is done locally, on the device (not in the cloud).
The newly launched SiriKit helps iOS app developers enables your iOS apps and watchOS apps to work with Siri, so users can get things done with your content and services using just their voice. In addition to extending Siri’s support for messaging, photo search and phone calls to more apps, SiriKit also adds support for new services, including ride booking and personal payments. This will help iOS app developers to increase their sales since everything has become digital with users just using “hey siri..” to avail of their services.
Apps adopt SiriKit by building an extension that communicates with Siri, even when your app isn’t running. The extension registers with specific domains and intents that it can handle. For example, a messaging app would likely register to support the Messages domain, and the intent to send a message. Siri handles all of the user interaction, including the voice and natural language recognition, and works with your extension to get information and handle user requests.
Siri Apps that work on iOS 10
Siri works in apps with following categories
- Ride booking
- Photo search
Siri enabled apps, or Siri apps have opened a whole new dimension of communication that was not possible earlier. One can simply send a command and a hot pizza according to one’s own tastes would be delivered all without calling Dominos or opening the app especially. This is a huge achievement and one can only hope that this would achieve higher and higher aspects of success with each passing year.
