What'syourthoughtsonstereotypes

stereotype is a belief about a group of individuals that people apply to any given individual deemed to be part of that group.

For example, blondes are not clever , girls are bad at sports , men are stronger than women etc

One advantage of a stereotype is that it enables us to respond rapidly to situations because we may have had a similar experience before.

One disadvantage is that it makes us ignore differences between individuals; therefore we think things about people that might not be true (i.e. make generalizations).

I have always been somewhat outside the bellcurve . I have never conformed to stereotypes .  In this socialisation process, children are introduced to certain roles that are typically linked to their biological sex. The term "gender role" refers to society's concept of how men and women are expected to act and behave. Gender roles are based on norms, or standards, created by society.

I told myself don't  let someone change who you are to become what they need or what .

Sadly growing up in the Asian  community I was somewhat social conditioned .

Gender stereotypes are dangerous because they might create unequal or unfair treatments to a certain person who chooses to defy people’s assumptions about his/her gender. When gender inequality occurs on the background of gender stereotyping, this is sexism

In a forever changing society with many different cultures, our goal is to reduce all forms of racism and discrimination, break down social barriers and promote social inclusion.

It is important we empower girls to believe in themselves .

I was lucky because my family have always supported me with my career choices .

Sadly my life choices haven't stopped the Auntie Jis from gossiping about me , look at her she's not married etc .  Its important that we challenge  preconceived national, cultural or religious stereotypes especially within the south Asian community I had to show people that I made it on my own I didn't need a man or children to make me complete , I have told myself that I answer to no one except God .

when people have tired to put me down or talk about me I've shown them success , it's so important we don't fit into boxes , now I am in media and travelling the world they are saying we are proud of you .

I smile and carry on following my bliss and not the crowd .

I mentor so many young people and it's important that we show the next generation that it's ok to live your life your way .

I would like to hear your thoughts

Why do people judge others ?

Why do we stereotype ?

Have you ever been a victim ?

Do you think society & communities expect us to behave in a certain way ?

I agree with you that Linda is on the money! Usually someone has to be narrow-minded to judge people by stereotype!

Stereotype comes essentially from ignorance...from the part of the the people who judge others through stereotype, rather than to know people, one by one! Thanks for this post Mandy!
