For my Women & Creativity course, I was assigned to read A Vindication of the Rights of Women by Mary Wollstonecraft. A particular statement from the introduction resonated with me: “Men endeavor to sink us still lower, merely to render us alluring objects for a moment; and women, intoxicated by the adoration of men…pay them.” As a 21st century college student, I witness men objectifying and disposing women on a regular basis. However, the issue is that men disrespect women because we allow them to treat us this way. While we constantly complain about heartless men, why do we continuously throw ourselves at them and grant them access to us so easily? Call me traditional, but what happened to the art of courtship?
