Whathappenedtotheartofcourtship?

For my Women & Creativity course, I was assigned to read A Vindication of the Rights of Women by Mary Wollstonecraft.  A particular statement from the introduction resonated with me: “Men endeavor to sink us still lower, merely to render us alluring objects for a moment; and women, intoxicated by the adoration of men…pay them.” As a 21st century college student, I witness men objectifying and disposing women on a regular basis. However, the issue is that men disrespect women because we allow them to treat us this way. While we constantly complain about heartless men, why do we continuously throw ourselves at them and grant them access to us so easily? Call me traditional, but what happened to the art of courtship?

I think it's easy to feel like we have to settle. It's hard to find a man who wants to date, and not one who wants to just netflix and chill. It's even harder to find men who like to take things slow. I know I've definitely chosen bad men because I thought it was better than nothing. But ultimately, I leaned it's better to hold out for someone good. I stopped answering the 2am "u up?" texts. I learned to say no to people I wasn't interested in. I learned that if someone can't respect me, they aren't worth my time. I can't change anyone.

It took me a long time to get here though, and I still mess up. It's easy to get swept away when it seems like there are no better options, unfortunately.
