Mashable reported on this woman in the UK who shot back against a male lawyer who said she looked "stunning" in her picture. The lawyer has since apologized by saying:

"Most people post pretty unprofessional pictures on Linked in, my comment was aimed at the professional quality of the presentation on linked in which was unfortunately misinterpretedMs Proudman is clearly highly respected and I was pleased to receive her request to linkup and very happy to instruct her on matters which [are] relevant to her expertise that remains the position."

So, before I read the interaction, I thought it was going to be a horrendous comment, like asking her out or saying he wanted her to be his mistress - something outrageous. My thoughts were all based on how the internet has exploded in support from women who are praising her efforts for speaking out against the man's behavior.

Yet, even though I do consider myself a feminist, I would not have been offended by the below interaction, and would have taken it as a compliment.

So, mogul community, am I alone in thinking she overreacted?

I would have to say I do find it inappropriate to bring up looks in a LinkedIn message. The site is for professional networking. The photos are meant to distinguish you and make you look professional, not to elicit physical attraction. Commenting on someone's looks in any professional setting is a violation of personal space and an indication that you take someone's work less seriously. It would be a different story if it were a dating site. And I doubt men get that kind of comment.

I agree with you. Women have been told bad things, yes, but I don't find his comment offensive. Perhaps he shouldn't have started the message by saying "this is probably horrendously politically incorrect" which sets himself up for being slammed.

Sometimes I think these are the cases that give the word "feminism" a bad name where people automatically judge that it means women against men, when in reality it's just seeking equal rights. She overreacted in my opinion.
