Howdoyouknowthatyou'reontherightcareerpath?

Viktorya
4mo Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States Question

This is something that I have been wondering a lot about lately and would love some input.

Is it true that your career should be something that you would do even as a hobby?

If you have hobbies that are nothing like your job, does that mean you're in the wrong field?

I'd love to hear any ideas you may have on this! :)

This is a great question, and the answer is always evolving as your dreams change and shift based on life circumstances, desires, etc. Ideally, I think a job you love is one where you don't watch the hours go by. A way to tell your passion is to ask yourself, 'what keeps you up late at night and what gets you out of bed in the morning' the answer to that question is more than likely where your passion lies. It's true that not all get to do their dream job, but it is possible to find a job that incorporates some of your passions/gifts. Does this help?

Thank you very much for your helpful response, Maddy! I didn't think about determining which passions/gifts could be best used in a job- you're right, it could be hard to find something that suits ALL of one's interests. The "all or nothing" approach can definitely be detrimental to success, now that I think about it

It's never too late to make a shift though! That's what I believe anyway.

Hobbies have (usually) nothing to do with your job. So don't be scared if you like your hobby more than you like your job — many people experience this

It'd be extremely hard finding a career that's also a hobby. I feel like we'd waste a lot more time trying to find that ideal job :/ However, I do think it's important to do your own hobbies outside of work and if that leads into a career, then all is right in the world :)

It is very normal to have hobbies outside if your work. For instance, a banker who collects stamps or who is also a photographer on his or her own right. Now, if the only thing that banker thinks of day and night is stamps and if he or she can make a living collecting and selling stamps, then he or she should, by all means, see if he or she could turn that into sinethibg he or she would do for a living. Hope this helps!

That's a great point. I used to think that our jobs were supposed to be the one thing we're passionate about, but I'm starting to see that's not true. Thank you Dawn!!
