Howdoyoudealwithracism?

As some might know, I have been dating Brandon, a Trinidadian, for the past 5 years and I have seen and heard a lot of mean and hurtful things because of it.

But I think today might have been the worst.

Today I went over to my mom’s friend’s house to do her hair and I know her husband just from passing however today I had to sit down and have a conversation.

I identified myself as a Democrat when politics was brought up and that sparked a problem for him. He started saying some racist things and I said “you need to stop because my boyfriend is “brown” and what you’re saying is extremely offensive and ignorant.”

I never even considered the notion that I couldn’t love someone because of the color of their skin.

Some awful things I was told :

“You should stick to your own kind.”

“Your Black/brown baby won’t love you.”

“It’s not natural.”

I lost it. I was trying to hold back my tears and shaking because how can anyone think like this ?

What would you have done or said ?
