Hello - Siheun and Numaan here! We’re the cofounders of Rally, a transportation technology startup that helps individuals and groups organize travel together by using buses and vans. In the past few years, we’ve helped hundreds of thousands of riders get to their favorite sports, concerts and festivals all across US and Canada.

The first trip we ever organized was for the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear, hosted in 2010 by Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, to oppose a growing trend of political extremism (sound familiar?). We built Rally to help communities come together, and have remained committed to supporting our constitutional right to peaceful assembly. We’re especially thrilled to help tens of thousands of women travel to the Women’s March on Washington, which will be on January 21, 2017.

One fun fact about us is that we met on OKCupid (as a 99% love match no less!) and are now life partners. Our families immigrated to NYC in the 70s and 80s from Korea and Pakistan, and we grew up watching our parents work together as co-founders of their own businesses. We’ve learned a lot from watching them, and from our experiences at Yale Entrepreneurial Institute and Techstars.

We’re so excited to answer your questions about how we started Rally, our entrepreneurial journey, and the upcoming Women’s March.

Now's your chance to ask us anything! Please write your questions in the comments section below and we'll answer the questions live on Tuesday, December 20th at 2pm ET.

My daughter and I booked seats on the bus through you that left for DC for the Women's March from Englewood, OH. I can honestly say it was the most uncomfortable bus I'd ever been on and the most unorganized trip ever. I'm so disappointed because I had heard good things about Rally. To begin with...our times of departure changed several times, even up to the evening we left, which made for great inconvenience for those that came from far away to take this bus. The bus trip up to DC was fairly uneventful except for the excruciatingly confined seating in the most uncomfortable seats I've ever been in. We got to DC and found out our bus would not be parking where it was scheduled to park, and the new place was quite distant from the closest metro station, instead of close by one, as was advertised to be. We were advised to buy $10 metro passes in advance just to use the nearby metro, and with the change in parking, we had no need for that, so more wasted money. After spending the day walking for miles around the city, we finally got back out to where the bus had to park by taking 3 hours and finally getting a cab just in time to get us to the bus before it was scheduled to leave. We never got out of the city, when another bus had engine trouble so we stopped and spent a good hour trying to help them, then waiting with them til they sent them another bus...which they never delivered TO the bus, but we had to follow the distressed bus to where they had to pick up their replacement bus. Finally, almost 2 hours late, we got on the highway to home, then found out we were to change drivers a way down the highway because of the sleep rules they had, which was okay...but we got to the exchange point, and find out there was NO driver there to replace ours, and they had no idea how long it would take them to get one there. After an hour or longer, a woman driver finally arrived and once again we got on the road...went down the highway a little distance and she pulled into a rest area that only had bathrooms and a couple vending machines. She announced she was dizzy and too ill to drive the bus any further. We stayed there for hours , only to find out it was going to take hours longer for the company to get a new driver to us and he was coming from at least 2 hours away. We all were exhausted, 2 women had flights they had to reschedule because they were not going to make it in time to catch them. I finally called my husband and he drove 4 hours to where we were stranded to pick me and my daughter up and take us back to Englewood, OH...and we finally got back there 6 hours later than we were supposed to arrive on the bus, and at our own inconvenience and expense. I'm sure the busline you contracted to do this trip, Lakefront Lines, has insurance or some kind of liability to reimburse those that paid for trips through them and had such inconveniences through no fault of our own. Whether we ever book through Rally again, and whether we put out good reviews on your company, or bad ones, depends on how you handle this incident. Since I've been unable to get a human to reply to me from your customer service line, either by phone or email, which is utterly ridiculous, I was forced to try to type my complaint here. Will look forward to some sort of resolution to this!!

I've noticed the posts here are quite old. There are some more recent posts on rallybus FB page that are saying you're rescinding reservations! Is this true? I'm coming all the way from California for this. Please reply. Thank you

Why is your customer service so piss-poor? Why is Rally Bus website non functional? I cannot view my confirmed reservation for 2 seats on a Rally Bus departing Richmond on January 21. The link in your email doesn't work. The link in your text message doesn't work. When I call the 855 number, there are no humans on call even though you claim your customer service reps are available from 9 til 5. I suggest you address your internal issues before you start rolling out more buses and doing all this glitzy marketing. I am totally disgusted!

Hello, when I first viewed the Rallybus sight from Woodstock, VT to the Womens' March, the cost was $130 per person. Theis bus has been cancelled and other busses from VT cost $265 and up. This is more than double the original cost. I do not feel that this is ethical and do not understand why this has occurred. Can you please explain?

I wish you all could take the buses and rescue the poor victims in Syria :-( Could you all see Rally Bus getting into causes like this where you rescue people from dangerous situations, or evacuating storms and things?

We’ve thought the same. Our platform is ready to evacuate people in the US and Canada in an emergency situation, and we hope to expand globally to help people everywhere.

Don't worry for private buses the trip organizer is automatically the bus captain (unless they chose to delegate). We'll be in touch with more details after the holidays

Ok great. I am the trip organizer, but I am not going on the trip, so I will need to delegate. Please make sure the delegating process is made clear in any emails sent regarding setting bus captains. Thanks so much! Sorry I have so many questions, this forum was a great idea!

There are many organizations providing buses for $60. Why did Rally bus' price jump for transportation to the Womens March on Washington from the advertised price of $65 per person to the final booking price of $125 (minimum) a person?

Thanks for the info! I am not suprised at that rate given the distance you will be traveling. I'm glad to hear your increase has been only $20; our Rally Bus rate increased at least double from the original quote rate.

I signed up at the $65 rate. Rally then told the group's organizer, after 44 people had signed up at the $65 rate, that the price was increasing to $125 and would go up further if our numbers dropped.

The people who signed up early pay what they signed up to pay -- that was a question I asked Rally in an email and it was explained that the price doesn't change once you have booked, it increases for those who have not YET booked. So if you signed up at $65, that's what you'll pay, is my understanding. If you signed up weeks later at $125, you'll pay that. I think that's the way it works.

Rally encourages initial sign-ups with early bird rates to help fill the bus, but prices rise as we get closer to the event date (because there are fewer buses left). In certain areas, buses are completely sold out, which means we have to bring buses in from neighboring states. Since there are multiple drivers for many of our trips, that means there are even more hotel accommodations and added costs when we bring in buses from very far away, leading to price increases.

We started the company because we were trying to help get as many people to a political rally in DC back in 2010. We weren’t trying to start a company at the time, but after our initial huge success, we realized we were solving a lot of people’s headaches with our technology and platform. It also doesn’t hurt that we’re the type of people in our friend groups that are always trying to bring people together and figuring out logistics. We love bringing people together, and as native New Yorkers, we love mass transit!

We have confirmed several hundred buses and will continue to confirm more every day in the coming weeks. After the 24th, if your bus is not confirmed, you will not be charged.

We appreciate Type A personalities as we are the same Type As here :) Thank you for recognizing our customer service team! I’m so happy to hear that. In the 6 years that we’ve been around, we’ve never thought that buses could sell out so quickly in entire regions. Our goal is to confirm trips that have met the threshold by January 1.

Wonderful, thanks! I actually just checked my listing again and it said that my bus is confirmed! Hooray! I'm assuming that means that there's no doubt it will actually be assigned a driver and go to the March? Now I can sleep again at night, haha! And yes, I have emailed or called your customer service team probably 20 times in the last few weeks and they have been supremely patient and responsive. Well done! I will look forward to specific updates on timing, etc. -- should we expect that? THANKS!

It depends on the trip… If it’s under 4 hours they’ll go straight through, if it’s a longer trip they’ll be making stops. There are not coolers on the buses, but please do feel free to bring your own (they may have to be stowed in the undercarriage if there’s not enough space in the main cabin). Just no glass, please!

I am a little concerned about the organization of the buses and the details... I've applied to be a bus captain weeks ago but haven't heard back, I therefore can't answer many questions for the people I rallied to be on the bus I requested. I am also wondering about timing and if that will be coordinated with March organizers, as well as drop-off locations (best and closest places in DC to drop off/pick up). Any additional info would be so appreciated! Thanks!

We’re sending an update out to Bus Captains this week. We’ve also being working closely with the WMW National Committee to organize parking and logistics in DC (they have set RFK as the official drop off/pick off point). Please bear with us a couple more days and we’ll be in touch!

Hi Susan, the buses will be waiting for you where they dropped you off. Your bus captain will have access to the driver, and also have a special phone number to reach Rally. Your Rally app will also have a chat function on the day-of, so you can communicate with your group.

We’re also excited to working together! We came up with the idea for Rally not because we wanted to start a company, but because wanted to help people get to a political rally in DC (back in 2010). Within a month, we mobilized 5,000 people to go to that initial rally. After that huge success, we realized that there was a real problem we were solving -- it’s very difficult to move lots of people and organize buses. Our platform modernizes how buses are procured, paid and utilized using the latest apps for drivers and riders. We look forward to continue defining “community mobility” here in North America, and everywhere else in the world!

I received an update from the Women's March saying it would now begin at 7:00 am and end at 2:00 pm. My bus to DC is scheduled to leave Durham, NC at 4:19 am, which will not get us to DC in time for the rally. Will you be changing the bus schedules to conform with the new times for the Rally & March?

Hey Gail, I think it’s 10am to 5pm ET -- maybe there was a time zone error? I will check back and confirm, but our plan is to be following the official event times so there’s a chance that we would update our itinerary if there are any changes.

No problem -- we use motorcoaches, which have massive undercarriages for bulk items like wheelchairs. The Women’s March organizers are also making sure that the event is ADA-compliant. It’s really awesome that you’re bringing your wife.

We are following the WMW National Committee’s directions on where buses must be staged or parked for the March by Stadium Armory DC. They agreed this location to make it as easy as possibly for the hundreds of thousands of marchers to reach the start location. Yes! We will be launching chat functionality in early January so you can connect with your fellow riders. As well as calling for volunteer captains for each bus to help marchers organize and help each other.

Even though we grew up in NYC where there are so many different kinds of people from all over the world, there’s plenty of discrimination you face for being “different.” But these adversities are what build your character and compassion for others. Numaan and I are both fortunate to come from families that emphasized community and demonstrated the power of coming together. We are great as we are many.

Will we be riding the same bus back, and if so will we be permitted to leave any items on the bus? Coming form a warm climate I will need to bring a back pack with warm clothes and comfort items for the overnight trip. Also will we be making scheduled stops along the way for food, water, stretching, etc. or do we need to bring everything with us?

2 questions: 1) We started the process of chartering the bus several weeks ago and were quoted at about $3400 per bus and $52-$100 per seat. Then our bus was confirmed and now the tickets are $100-$200 each bc the bus price went up to $5600 due to high demand. Does that mean those who initially signed up and were quoted the lower price may have to pay over $100 if we don't fill the bus to capacity? 2) We set our destination as Union Station for the march because that is what is seemed most buses were doing. Even though the parking lot for buses is at Stadium Armory DC metro station, can we still get dropped off at Union Station, or should we change our destination to Stadium Armory? How does one change their destination after confirmation?

Hi Ileana, someone on our team reached out to you by email. I hope you got all your questions addressed! Since you created your own trip (http://rallybus.net/create), all your riders will end up paying the same amount, no matter how many people end up on the bus. The total cost of the trip is always divided equally between all riders. You can email [email protected] to make any changes to your itinerary. We are following the WMW National Committee’s directions on where buses must be staged or parked for the March by Stadium Armory DC.

I cannot get to you any other way!! Your customer service sucks! Your website doesn't work! You don't answer your phones during business hours. How do I talk to a human about my issues? [email protected]

Thanks very much. I understand the final bus cancellation deadline is December 24th, but can people continue to sign up for our bus after that? What is the final deadline for sign ups?

Riders will be able to book up until the day of the March (as long as there are seats left on the bus). If you sign up for a bus that’s never confirmed, then you will never be charged.

How many people are you all taking to the march? Sounds like a cool company.

Thanks Maddy, we think it’s pretty cool, too. We’re estimating we’ll take over 40,000 people from as far away as Minneapolis, Houston, and Miami. This will be the largest undertaking by a single bus company ever!
