Hi! We are Naomi Hirabayashi and Marah Lidey. We are entrepreneurs who cofounded Shine Text, a cool daily text experience to help you be your best self at work and life.

How it works is that each morning, Shine Text sends you actionable tips and content around confidence, daily happiness, mental health, or productivity.

We were inspired to start the company when we were colleagues at work. Leaning on each other for support, we became aware that our feelings of not being qualified for our successes stemmed from false beliefs about ourselves.

We realized so many people struggle with the same feelings, yet we often feel like we're the only ones. Through Shine, we want to scale the support we gave each other to as many people as possible to elevate important conversations around living intentionally and being your best self.

A little bit about Naomi: Naomi Hirabayashi is the co-founder of Shine: the daily messaging experience to help you be your best self. Prior to Shine, Naomi was the Chief Marketing Officer at DoSomething.org, the largest organization for young people and social action in the world. Naomi lives in Brooklyn with her husband, is passionate about diversifying entrepreneurship, women & confidence, and believes Brené Brown is a QUEEN.

A little bit about Marah: Marah Lidey is the co-founder of Shine Text, helping people live more intentionally through the power of daily messaging. Her expertise lies at the intersection of millennials and messaging; Marah previously directed mobile and social teams for brands like DoSomething.org, American Express and Viacom. Marah secured her B.A. in Journalism from Grady College at the University of Georgia and currently reside in Brooklyn, NY. A World Economic Forum Global Shaper, and one of the Top 35 People to Watch in NYC Tech by Built in NYC, Marah also actively advocates for increasing racial and socioeconomic diversity in technology and entrepreneurship.

Now's your chance to ask us anything! Please write your questions in the comments section below and we'll answer the questions live on Thursday, December 15th at 2pm ET.

So far, the most rewarding part has been that it truly doesn’t feel like work. We’re building something that is fundamentally improving people’s lives alongside great friends who are brilliant at what they do. - Marah

Hard. Entrepreneurship can get a lot of glamour. And there are definitely amazing moments when we still pinch ourselves that we get to do this. That said, you’ve got to be ready to work harder than you ever have, to whittle down your social circle to the true ride or die people, deal with a lot of rejection about things that you care about (every day) and listen to and learn from that rejection and a lot of other things that there are no way to prepare for. If you’re thinking about, don’t be afraid of what’s in store. Just know what you’re getting into and ask yourself if you’re ready or not. - Marah

The holiday blues are real. That said, we’re both the snatch-the-phone-away friends, when we see our girls starting to send another text to that guy. I’d recommend two things. One - when you’re tempted to text your ex, think of someone supportive in your life and text them instead. Two - you should probably sign up for Shine (www.ShineText.com). It’ll be like bae text you every am, reminding you that you’re never really alone in how you’re feeling. - Marah

What text would you send to our divided country right now too? The US feels somewhat torn apart after the election.

That’s a tough one. Our approach for post-election (the day after the election was one of our highest engaged days to date) was to encourage people to allow themselves to just feel whatever they were feeling. We encouraged people to be even more mindful of self-care in the wake of the stress, tension, and intensity that our country was facing as the result of one of the most divided elections in history. -Naomi

Love this concept. Way to go for creating the company. What text would you send to the poor victims in Syria right now? I am so sad on what's going on there and they could definitely use a message of love and hope.

Figure out whatever it is that makes you feel as good as you can right now, and unapologetically invest in doing more of whatever that is -- whether it’s more time by yourself, getting up early to meditate, or going out with friends multiple times a week for some extra QT with the people who matter most. The biggest thing is *you* taking care of *you* & focusing on whatever makes you feel the best. - Naomi

You’re so kind! Thank you :) We both remember the panicky feeling we all get post-graduation where it feels like whatever decision you make for your first job will define EVERYTHING. Not true. Promise. Especially within our generation, our careers will take many turns and the best thing you can do is try to learn something new and ownable at each new job you take. And where you can, follow good people. Every job I’ve ever taken has been because the hiring manager or CEO felt like someone I could learn from and who would be in my corner over the years (shoutout to Scott Markle, Suzanne Rosenthal, Lauren Kruk-Winokur, Adam Hirsch and Matt Holford). Good bosses matter, for years to come. - Marah

We get a lot of “get out of my head, Shine” and “how did you know I needed this today” type of feedback. It makes our day to know that we’re empowering people to thrive every single day and the long-term implications of that for an entire generation are really exciting. - Marah

Prioritizing -- both immediate & long-term business goals. We’re a very lean team in our first year so every hour counts. It’s typically a mix of our team meeting to identify the most important things to get done that day & hunkering down to get it done. - Naomi

As a follow-up to the previous question: what are some of the struggles you have faced as successful business women? Have you found yourselves in accepting and uplifting communities or have you been seen or treated as inferior because of your gender?

Great question! We learned very early on in the beginning of our business to surround ourselves with folks who would unequivocally support us and be honest with us. Because of that we’ve found some truly amazing advisors, investors and friends in the startup community - and having them in our corner has made all of the difference. - Marah

You say that you had feelings of not being qualified for our successes which were rooted in false beliefs about yourselves. Do you think some of these false beliefs were connected to some of society's ideas about women and their role?

Absolutely. Power is not distributed equally, and neither is confidence. Women, people of color, LGBTQ people, etc. are dealing with the consequences of decades of systemic oppression → and one of the implicit side effects is in how we view our own accomplishments. The best thing we can do as minorities is remind ourselves and one another that we are qualified, that we are incredibly smart and that we are good enough. - Marah

Big picture, what I love is every day we’re reminding people, and in turn ourselves, we’re not alone in our day-to-day struggles. All the highs & lows are what make us human, so one easy step is to try and release the shame that comes *with* feeling insecure, or unsure, or stressed, etc. Specifically, one that’s really stuck with me from this week is around binge thinking. I’m definitely guilty of ruminating thoughts, replaying certain scenarios again and again in my head which is not always the most helpful or productive ;) Our tip this week around binge thinking was: “Remember, the present is your point of power. Today, focus on being your best for *right now* & dismiss stress around the past & what's to come.” -- that one’s really stuck with me. What’s the 1 thing I can control & impact *right now* -- and trying to think more about that vs. stress from the past or anxiety about the future. - Naomi

We came up with the idea for Shine when we worked together at another organization (where we met 5 years ago) & leaned on each other to process personal & professional stuff we were dealing with. We talked about about how sometimes we didn’t feel qualified for our success (oh hello, impostor syndrome), when really we *were* qualified, and that it stemmed from false beliefs about ourselves. We realized that it was a feeling many people shared & we wanted to provide the support we offered each other day in and day out, through technology. Building on what we built at DoSomething.org (where we met), our expertise & our relationship, the idea of Shine was born. We love lilly singh! We’re huge fans of what she stands for & it was such a natural partnership, we were just pumped to work with her & provide inspiring tips to her fans on how to best support other women & practice self-love. - Naomi
