Hi! I'm Janie Taylor.

I'm a professional ballet dancer who began my training at 2 years old in Houston, Texas. My first teacher was Gilbert Rome. I then went on to train at the Giacobbe Academy of Dance in New Orleans, and after going to the summer program at the School of American Ballet for two years, I joined as a full-time student.

While at SAB, I had the chance to originate a featured role in Christopher Wheeldon's Soiree Musicale for the Spring workshop. From there, I got the Mae L. Wien Award and was invited to join as an apprentice with the New York City Ballet.

A month later, I became a member of their corps de ballet and was then promoted to the rank of Soloist in 2001 and then to Principal in 2005.

While a Principal with the New York City Ballet, I had the chance to originate roles in ballets choreographed by Peter Martins and Benjamin Millepied, and performed in multiple ballets and pieces by artists such as Jerome Robbins, Susan Stroman and George Balanchine. I also appeared in the film Center Stage

I retired from the NYCB in 2014 and now you can find me setting ballets for companies around the world. I've also started a career in design and have designed costumes for the New York City Ballet and LA Dance Project.

Now's your chance to ask me anything! Please write your questions in the comments section below and I'll answer the questions live on Tuesday, November 29th at 5:30pm ET.

Porcupine with a kangaroo pouch!? That was a platypus! I'm so embarrassed for both of us right now.

I get nervous about how so much is shifting to digital experiences and less people are going to things like opera and ballet. What is your feeling on the future of ballet and how can we keep it popular for the next generation?

I think there a lot of ways to interest a young audience through digital experiences which will hopefully inspire them to come see the real thing - which of course is best seen live and in person!

I'm not sure there was anything I wished I had known that I didn't. young dancers should know it's a lot of hard work but all that work is totally worth the value of what you learn and get to experience.

I have been watching this company closely for the last two years. After retiring from City Ballet, my husband was acting as Ballet Master for LADP. I followed them on tour and watched all of their performances. I wasn't sure how I would feel watching so much dance a few days after retiring but I was so inspired by these dancers. They are a group of really incredible and very individual dancers, but they also work together in such a cohesive and beautiful way. After dancing with Benjamin for so many years in NY and having been choreographed on by him many times, I have continued to work with him in many different ways. I started doing some costume design for LADP and I have also been setting (teaching and coaching) his ballets for ballet companies all over the world. It feels very natural and exciting to dance his work here at LADP!

The performances at the ACE will be really great! You will see the amazing dancers of LADP performing in Benjamin's most recent piece On the Other Side, as well as a piece by Roy Assaf called Two Acts for the Blind. You will also get to see my beautiful ballerina friend Carla Korbes performing Christopher Wheeldon's After the Rain with a partner of hers from PNB. And then Benjamin and I will perform his piece called Homecoming with live music by Rufus Wainwright

Is it hard to find work life balance in the dance world? Especially with dating, was it hard to find time when dancing can be so time consuming and demand a lot of focus?

It can be- some dancers welcome having a social life outside of the ballet and others feel so connected to other dancers who understand what their lives are like.

Going to SAB for me was like a dream. I had always wanted to be in NY so here I was in NY with a bunch of other kids who were just like me (they loved ballet!) I loved my teachers at SAB and loved what I was learning. Even though it was hard, I loved every minute of it.

I'm not sure there was ever a time when I knew or thought I was gifted at dancing. I have just always known that I loved doing it. From early on I loved the challenge of it. It was something I enjoyed trying to master even knowing that the perfection of it can not be achieved. But I like working towards something that continues and continues. Balanchine's ballets in particular and his style of ballet are what made me want to be a ballerina. the freedom in the movement even though it is still specific is really what excited me.

I don't miss dancing with a company necessarily, but I do miss dancing. I do miss all the wonderful people I spent every day dancing with. I mostly miss being up in the air all day, haha. I miss moving to music all day long and the physicality and therapeutic-ness that dancing provides. I am very much looking forward to the environment here at LADP and experiencing all of this with the amazing dancers that make up this company

I have done a number of costume designs for LADP including designs for Helix by Justin Peck, Hearts and Arrows by Benjamin Millepied, O'de by LADP dancer Julia Eichten (performed in the gardens at Versailles) and among others, the most recent being designs for Martha Graham duets that the company is performing.

One of my favorite ballets is Bugaku by George Balanchine- unfortunately a ballet I never had the chance to perform. Some of my personal favorite performances were my debut in La Valse which I danced with Sebastien Marcovici, and the first time I performed Afternoon of a Faun with one of my frequent partners Craig Hall. Both of these performances felt like one of those rare and magical moments on stage

I can name a few favorites - Serenade, the Cage, La Valse, Dybbuk among many many others. It's hard to choose just one. Dancing can involve a lot of foot pain but it's not necessarily after each performance. It depends what you are dancing. We have lots of amazing physical therapists helping us who teach us exercises for strength and injury prevention based on what might be chronic problems for each of us. Listening to your body is very important for injury prevention.

I guess you could say I played myself since they used my real name in the movie, but I was really just a student in the class- not a main character. You can see me getting off the bus in the very beginning of the film. Filming was a lot of fun as most of dancers were friends, but the days were very long!
